On June 1st, Kasey and Jim experienced every parent's nightmare. Their 1-year-old daughter, James Ashley IV (IV), was flown from Montrose, CO to Denver Children’s Hospital for low oxygen levels and an enlarged heart. Upon arrival, she was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, a collapsed left lung, and both rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus. IV was immediately put on medicines and high-flow oxygen. After 14 days in the pediatric ICU, she had a major pulmonary episode and was placed on a life-saving ECMO machine to pump and oxygenate her blood. She spent four days on the ECMO and now receives continued support through a breathing and feeding tube. Her left lung remains collapsed, prolonging the wait for more procedures to understand her diagnosis and future treatment.

The reality of receiving medical treatment in a city hours from their home means mounting medical and day-to-day expenses. Those of us who know Kasey and Jim, know that they are the first to stop everything and help. As a teacher, Kasey has dedicated her life to others for almost two decades. It's my hope that we can now support them during this incredibly challenging time.
