Hello,
Eleanor Schwank is the daughter of my brother(Callen) & sisters-in-law(Meghan), but she is also my niece & goddaughter. She has recently been diagnosed with retinoblastoma aka eye cancer.
Callen & Meghan were told of 3 facilities that specialized in this: Iowa St University, Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and Mayo Clinic.
Without hesitation they drove through the night to Iowa State University since it was the earliest appointment they could schedule. Her MRI results determined that the tumor is only in her right eye and has not spread to her brain or other eye. This is fantastic news!!! The tumor is a stage D - the largest being stage E. The imaging also showed seeds which means the tumor is breaking away from the big mass and “floating” around, which may cause it to spread to other areas in the body.
They are still planning on flying to Philadelphia on Sunday (plane tickets are booked) to get a 2nd opinion at Will’s Eye Hospital to discuss other treatment options.
As I’m sure you can imagine, this will cost money. Something the insurance doesn’t cover. Plane tickets, hotel costs, on-the-road meals, gas and all kinds of other things aren’t cheap, especially when you don’t plan for them.
They don’t know yet what this is going to cost, and probably won’t know for a while. But if we can help them cover some of the cost of their traveling expenses I figure this is something that could help them right now. Even donating $5 is enough to give one of them a meal. Or a $1 is enough to buy a coffee for all of the sleepless nights they’re going to be up waiting to hear what’s next.
They ask that you please keep them in your prayers as they are clearly working! And that they trust in God’s plan and are taking things one day/one hour at a time.
