Baby Calliope Jade’s Heart Surgery Expenses
Little Calliope has been on such a journey in her short 6 months, from 3lbs in the NICU to 9lbs and feisty! She’s come so far, at about 4 weeks old we learned she had a heart murmur, a few days later we were told that the murmur was caused by stenosis of the aortic and pulmonary valves and that this is almost only caused by William’s Syndrome. We were whisked away to the pediatric cardiologist for regular growth scans. We were all crossing our fingers that the valve would grow with her and surgery wouldn’t be necessary until she was older, this was not the case. Last week we were told that surgery was happening soon and would be in Denver.
After speaking with the hospital in Denver I got super nervous as all the normal avenues that house the families of pediatric patients have been temporarily suspended due to Covid-19. Her heart surgery is scheduled for June 26th, with a pre op cat scan 4 days prior. Average no complications recovery before discharge for this surgery is 15 to 20 days. It’s looking like the cheapest way to house all of us would be a monthly Air BnB. That way we’d have access to a kitchen and thus more affordable meals and with 6 kids let me tell ya eating out is soooo expensive.

Of course this is coming up at the worst time financially. Between the travel expenses, the lodging, food for just about a month on top of all the regular monthly expenses because we’ll need a home to come home to is more than we’re prepared for. So not only am I terrified about my tiny 9lb, 6 month old having to need open heart surgery but now I’m worrying myself sick about how we’re going to pay for getting there and back and a month of living expenses in another state.
