Thank you for stopping to learn about the struggle of Bryn Horton.
Born two months early due to an unknown complication in her bowels. Weighing in at just 4lbs, she went immediately into the NICU. Only a few hours old she was rushed for surgery to diagnose the problem. The surgeon found she had a jejunal atresia (small intestine was not attached internally). This required a jejunostomy. She had two stomas brought to the surface of her abdomen and kept in an ostomy pouch, to help her grow her small intestine until it could be reattached. Unfortunately that was just the beginning.
Due to complications she could not eat like a regular baby, she required her nutrition through a central line. Everything appeared to be healing correctly and after 39 days in NICU she was transferred to the Children's Hospital.
That's when things got more complicated for her. She developed a severe central line infection in her bloodstream. That caused her to go septic, she was then moved to the PICU. After two blood transfusions they preformed a spinal tap, placed a urine catheter, she had to be placed on a ventilator as she was no longer able to breathe on her own. She was then put on 3 different antibiotics and spent another 19 days in this condition. Finally some progress she was able to come off of the ventilator and was moved back to her regular ward.
On November 12th she was stable enough to have the reversal surgery to attach her intestines internally. 5 more days of no food to allow proper healing. The family was hoping to take her home to her sister within two weeks after the surgery. Unfortunately what followed her surgery was multiple infections, and line complications that led to 7 new central line procedures.
She caught Norovirus right before Christmas. She developed a yeast infection in the bloodstream from a line infection, and a lot of daily projectile vomiting with no answers. (She was praised for her colours and creativity with her vomit.)
It was decided she needed a third contrast study, to see if there were mechanical issues. This study showed what we feared, she needed another surgery due to unknown blockages.
On February 13th she underwent another major surgery. They found multiple adhesion's blocking her digestive track, and preventing her from processing food.
A few days after the surgery Bryn spiked another fever, the family is still waiting for blood cultures to come back to diagnose another possible line infection.
Throughout this whole time the hospital and staff have been amazing and second family to Bryn. Her mom visit twice a day, everyday while her dad works, and grandma watches her older sister. Anyone who has had to pay for parking down town knows it's not cheap. Through all this life keeps happening and bills are adding up. This Go Fund Me is to assist the family during this hard time to allow them some relief to focus on Bryn's recovery.
