I am not one to ask for help and am the type of person that prefers to keep everything to myself, however I have recently found that I have a whole lot of people in my corner who are ready and willing to help.
Unfortunately, we have found ourselves in a place where we do need to ask for help. Brighton’s medical expenses are racking up and we are having to stay in Tacoma near the Hospital to be with him. Of course we were prepared to have a baby, however financially we were not prepared for the extra medical expenses of him being in the NICU, cost for us to stay in Tacoma near the Hospital, gas going from Tacoma to Lacey to see Braxton (who is not allowed in the NICU at all), food and also items that we will now need for when Brighton comes home. All of these things are adding up and on top of everything we are going through, has become overwhelmingly difficult to manage. I am on leave from work (unpaid) and have been since July due to complications during my pregnancy.
For those of you who are unaware of the situation, here is our story:
Baby Brighton was born on Friday 2/15/19 at 10:06AM weighing in at just over 8 lbs. He came crashing into the world with a quickness. I went into labor at 6:00AM, unsure it was actual labor I waited too long and didn’t start getting ready to leave until about 9:00AM. Water broke at home at 9:30AM and I felt him coming so the ambulance came to get me and I got to the hospital at about 9:45AM and he was born at 10:06AM. I didn’t plan on doing it without an epidural or without anything for the pain, but things don’t always go as planned. Mike had to get Braxton to my Mom so he actually didn’t make it to the Hospital until right after Brighton was born. As soon as he came out they put him on my chest for about a second. I didn’t even get to look at him or touch him and all I knew was something was wrong because he was purple and limp. All I can remember is screaming “why can’t I hear him?” And nobody would answer me...not even one of the 15 doctors or nurses surrounding my baby. All of a sudden they were whisking him away and I yelled at Mike to go with him.
Then my own personal hell. I was completely alone in the room. EVERYONE left and for 20 minutes I didn’t know what was going on. I thought my baby was dead. Finally the doctor came in and said that something happened during the delivery process where he was without oxygen for an unknown amount of time and after he was born they were breathing for him for 7 minutes. He had seizures and high blood pressure and they said they were transporting him to Tacoma General to be placed on a cooling machine for 72 hours to reduce the swelling in his brain and to stop any further brain damage from occurring. The team came down from Tacoma General to take him and they did let me touch his hand but that was the only contact I had with my baby at that point. They took him away at about noon and I was not released and able to see him in Tacoma until about 9:00PM. He has had more seizures, blood transfusion, breathing problems, brain bleeds, feeding tube, oxygen and we are not sure of what the future holds for baby B.
We are so very grateful for all of the love and support we have received. According to the doctors, we will not be going home any time soon and Brighton has a long road ahead of him. Please don’t feel obligated to donate in any way, if you are able to do so, thank you from the bottom of our hearts and if not, your prayers and positive thoughts are just as powerful!
Thank you!
