Baby Ben's Big Fight

Our family needs your help to take baby Ben to Germany for critical treatment to reduce the impacts of a brain injury caused at birth. Ben needs to spend two weeks out of every month, for the next year, in Germany at a specialist clinic to receive intensive neuro-rehabilitation therapy to hopefully avoid severe Cerebral Palsy.

Ben’s story…

Ben is a really happy, cuddly and engaged little boy, he's always laughing and loves his mummy and daddy very much. He was born in August 2019 to delighted, first-time, parents Marta and John. After a problem-free full-term pregnancy, Ben's arrival wasn't easy. Despite clear signs of distress, there was a significant delay in delivery. When Ben was finally delivered the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck twice and he had contracted an infection after ingesting fluid. Ben spent the next 4 weeks in NICU suffering seizures and fighting the infection. It was later confirmed that he’d acquired a brain injury as a result of the cord around his neck.

An infant's brain has a remarkable capacity to repair itself and the family held great hope that this would happen naturally for Ben.
Tragically however in September 2020 Ben was diagnosed with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, devastating news to the family. Quadriplegic CP is a loss of movement & control in all four limbs and torso often requiring a wheelchair and assistive technology.

Time is critical with Ben's case as we have a small window of opportunity to avoid the worst fate with appropriate treatment before the age of two. Despite this, shockingly the NHS critical early intervention treatment has been minimal for Ben during Covid. Marta and John have been consumed with efforts to access treatment, educate themselves, and advocate for Ben.

There is hope…

With no further treatment available for Ben under the NHS, John and Marta hope to take Ben for intensive neurorehabilitation treatment in Germany. This is a plan developed in consultation with their Neurologists and is considered Ben's best chance at avoiding severe disability.

The cost of the treatment, travel, and accommodation for the biweekly schedule is steep at over 100,000 GBP. Compounding the financial pressure they're relying on only John's income as Marta has taken a leave of absence from work and her Civil Engineering degree to focus Ben's health.

While the complaint & legal process with the NHS can take years, we are turning to the kindness of friends, family, and strangers to help give Ben this chance.
