Baby Baileys NICU stay At UCDavis large animal hospital
As most of you know Shaylee's foal was born on 4/22. She had an easy birth and seemed to be doing great! When she was 4 days old she suddenly kept needing help up and became very week by the afternoon. As soon as I got home from work, Livi and I loaded her and Willow up in the trailer and headed to Pioneer vet. Pioneer worked on Bailey for a couple hours but determined that she was too ill for their capabilities and suggested we head immediately to UC Davis Large animal hospital. Livi and I headed to Davis and arrived there at midnight. The NICU team began working on her right away and during ultra sound found intussusception (telescoping) in her bowels. They started her on oxygen,IV fluids and meds. The next day the ultra sound showed that it had resolved but she was still very sick. Further testing and assessment has led them to believe she had a mild case of dummy foal syndrome which led her to become week and down. While she was down she licked pine shavings and caused an impaction. They are also ruling out botulism toxicity at this time. Bailey has passed a large amount of shaving and is beginning to improve. The vet is very optimistic at this time but she remains in 1:1 NICU care with her momma Willow at her side.
This baby is Shaylee's dream baby that she has been waiting for for the last year and a half! She has huge plans for her and Baileys future. As a mom I have to do everything I can to help her continue with that dream. At this time the vet bill is becoming close to what I can handle and as much as I hate to ask for help, for my kiddo I will do anything. Shaylee has a special way with horses and I cannot let this crush her and her dreams. the vets are estimating the total cost at 10k. And with seeing major improvements we would like to continue her care. Anyone that is willing to help we are forever thankful and grateful.
