We recently learned that one of our twin boys (due in mid-to-late May) has spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Baby B will need immediate surgery after he is born to close the wound in his back. Shortly after that, he will need surgery to place a shunt in his head to drain the excess fluid. Health insurance will cover most of these expenses.

In addition to the expenses not covered by the insurance, we are trying to raise money for cord blood banking (not covered by insurance). Currently, there are no stem cell therapies for spina bifidia or complications from hydrocephalus, but researchers are working on developing those treatments, and we are hopeful that through medical advancements, those stem cells could be useful to us in the future.
