Baby Alex Needs a New Kidney. Help Save Him!

Alexander is ten months old and lives in Bucharest, Romania. He suffers from Infantile Nephrotic Syndrome (a loss of protein through the urine of the kidneys) and following a kidney crisis that took place on July 6, 2019 he is hospitalized, under dialysis and fighting to survive. He must be transferred to Palermo, Italy for treatment and a kidney transplant in order to save his life.  I am appealing to you for any financial help you can offer and to share the story of our little fighter.

These beautiful eyes saw the light of day ten months ago, bringing much joy to our family. But soon after his birth, we noticed he had swollen legs and was gaining weight too fast, leading us to investigate. That's when I found out that he has Nephrotic Syndrome, a condition which is characterized by a high level of protein in the urine and low blood protein.

Despite our concerns, Baby Alex started corticosteroid therapy for a period of 12 weeks. Our nightmare started when our child experienced adverse side effects and he was declared corticosteroid resistant. In addition, he became traumatized by the treatments during the hospitalization.  He had serious edema and it was almost impossible for doctors to harvest blood: His veins were very small and difficult to find.

Trips to the hospital have become a routine in our lives bringing many tears and suffering. My child was so affected, he refused to eat and move. Given these issues, I refused to let him receive cortisone and better days followed. Then in June, he had a virus and ended up in the emergency room in a near coma. Our nightmare has intensified as he had catheters inserted and started peritoneal dialysis. After being stabilized and hospitalized at the nephrology section, where we are currently continuing dialysis, he had several complications including urinary infection, peritonitis, blood infection from the central venous catheter and he is given antibiotics both venously and enterally.

Despite our excruciating  pain, we continue to fight.

Three week ago, we received more bad news,  a storm-catheter installed in Alex’s tummy was no longer working and another medical intervention was needed. Following the surgery, he cries a lot and has lost a lot of weight. A few days after the surgery and changing the catheter,  he had an infection in the peritoneum again.

My child has been in the hospital for 2 months, he has been doing peritoneal dialysis for 40 minutes clamped, and 40 minutes unclamped, he has strabismus, he can't move because of the catheters, he is 6.800 kg, he only eats through a tube, and cannot urinate. Such diseases are rarely seen in such small children.
Treatment involves dialysis and a kidney transplant in Italy. This does not guarantee success, but gives our child a chance to live. Please keep us in your prayers and donate to help save Baby Alex.
