Baby Addison & her fight with pneumonia
Donation protected
My name is Miranda Hosfelt and I am asking for your support for my family, including my baby girl Addison.
Unfortunately, my 12-month-old daughter, Addison, has been very sick since Friday April 7th. With her temperature reaching 104, labored breathing, runny nose, and a bad cough, I took Addison to her pediatrician who diagnosed her with a cold and was told to rotate Tylenol & Motrin every 4 hours for the fever, and just to keep an eye on her. On April 9th, Easter Sunday, she was still having the same symptoms that weren’t getting better and was barely eating so I decided to take her to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. There in the ER she was diagnosed with pneumonia, a double ear infection, and a UTI. After stabilizing her heart rate, the ER doctor said to treat her with antibiotics for the infection and Tylenol/Motrin for the fever and was ready to send us home. At shift change the next ER doctor on duty suggested we stay in the Observation Unit so Addison can receive some IV fluids for dehydration and be monitored overnight. We are so glad that we agreed to stay because about an hour after being transferred into the Observation Unit, Addison's O2 desaturated into the 50s. If we would’ve left the ER and went home, the outcome could have been devastating. She was then considered in acute respiratory failure and was transferred into the PICU so she could be treated with high flow oxygen. While in the PICU they ran more tests and labs, and she tested positive for metapneumovirus and her lungs were highly inflamed. After spending 3 days in the PICU they were able to wean her from the high flow oxygen to a nasal canula. They transferred her down to the step-down unit around 12:30 AM on Thursday, April 13th. They are trying to wean her off the oxygen but every time they do her O2 drops into the 80's and they have to put her back on it. They also had to put her back on IV fluids for dehydration again. We are unsure as to when they will be able to discharge Addison to go home.
To add more stress to the situation, I was denied paid Caregivers Leave and FMLA at my place of work since I have been there less than a year and only have 11 hours of banked PTO (1 day and 3 hours), so I will be out of work/money for an unknown amount of time. In February we moved into a new home and in March upgraded to a bigger vehicle, so finding a way to get the bills paid is the last thing I want to worry about right now. I am kindly asking for any support that will benefit Addison and my family during this time so that I can be with my baby until her lungs recover from this disease. Helping with some of the financial burden so I can focus on Addison's healing process would be greatly appreciated.
In addition, Addison was also admitted to Children’s Hospital for 2 days in January 2023 with RSV, so being back not even 3 months later for another respiratory illness has definitely taken its toll on the family. There is a chance that this may be a reoccurring condition for Addison until her lungs get stronger as she gets older.
If you cannot donate, please at least say a prayer for Addison and my family for a quick and speedy recovery. We just want to be home.
