Baby A's Army
I can not believe I am sitting here writing this. Our family has been sitting here for the last 6 days in complete shock.
Our wee Baby A has Leukemia.
Abby was under observation with her doctor for lymph nodes that were okay but large. Ultrasound ruled them to be “normal,” but additional tests were done, including blood. On Friday at 11 pm, about 12 hours after the test her family Doctor called and said to get to emergency as the white blood counts were really low.
Southlake ran a lot of tests and the sent results to sick kids. Sick kids requested that Abby be transferred by ambulance as soon as possible.
At sick kids, Abby received a diagnosis of leukemia in less than an hour and a refined diagnosis of ALL-B Cell leukemia by the afternoon. This is the best kind
of leukemia. This type has a 98% cure rate.
Abby began treatment immediately to get blood to the level required to start Chemotherapy treatment. She had a bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture on Monday. These procedures are multifaceted, but several key things happened: they have officially begun chemo. They received a subtype diagnosis of CNS-2, which means the leukemia is in her cerebral spinal fluid. This reduces the cure rate to 86% and increases the chemo dosage into the lumbar puncture, which will now happen two times per week instead of once. The first phase is the induction phase, and it lasts 28 days. The treatment for all leukemia is 2.5 years.
As they are staying at sick kids, there are plans, and everyone is very confident. Everything is sudden; every moment things are changing. But we know that Abby will come out the other side just as firey as she went in.
At this point, my sister and her family are just taking each day as it comes. They have never asked for help, but to honest, I can't even imagine not trying to help a family that is always the first to donate, volunteer, support, drive, cook, etc. I have received so many messages from people who love my sister and this family, thank you for your prayers, thoughts and love.
This is going to take a village.

Please know All funds that aren't used for Abby will be donated back to Sick Kids to help ensure that it's possible for families going through this to receive the same level of incredible care they are.
