Shitzu Suffers Broken Jaw at Petco
The short version:
Baboo is a 7 year old male shitzu who suffered a broken jaw after getting groomed at Petco in Clark , NJ on Sept 16, 2018. Baboo is my brother's dog who I am caring for after my brother had a stroke on Sept 2, 2018. Baboo had surgery to correct his jaw on Wed Sept 19 and now faces up to 6 weeks with a taped muzzle and feeding tube. To date I have spent approximately $3000 on medical expenses and I expect at least another $2000, which will include costs for a day time caretaker to come in and care for him while I am at work. I just wanted to help my brother in this uncertain time, and now I also want to help Baboo get better. Any help would be welcome. As of this writing Petco has taken no responsibility for any of this.
The long version:
Baboo is my brother's dog. My brother had a massive stroke on Sept 2, and has been hospitalized since then; he will be moving into a nursing home soon and we are not sure about his long term prognosis. I offered to take care of his dog for a while... and Baboo came to my home on Saturday, Sept 15. He was in good health and had no injuries, but he needed a haircut badly. In order to get him groomed at the Petco near my home he needed to get updates on a couple vaccines. I took him to get those vaccines at Petco on Saturday, Sept 15. I stayed with Baboo during that visit while a vet there did a wellness check on him as well.
Baboo's grooming appointment was for 10am, Sunday, Sept 16. I dropped him off and picked him up between 12:30-1pm after receiving a call that he was finished. When I picked him up something seemed off with the left side of his face. I pointed this out to the groomer who said his behavior might be due to the shots he received the day before. I took him home but it was obvious that something wasn't right so I brought him to another vet in the area that evening. This vet's assessment read: "Unable to fully evaluate mouth without sedation. Discussed possible lethargy secondary to vaccines. If no improvement or worsening have Baboo come in for sedation."
After no improvement (he'd stopped eating and drinking) I brought him back on Tuesday, Sept 18, and sedation was administered and X-rays were taken. The results? A "copious amount of bloody saliva present on the left side of the mouth ... jaw fracture present".
I was stunned. The vet said it might heal without surgery as long as he could eat and drink on his own, but after another day it was apparent he could not. Surgery would be our only option, and was performed on Wed, Sept 19. The healing process would involve his muzzle being taped shut and feeding via feeding tube for 6 weeks. It's possible the feeding tube could be removed after a couple weeks but only if he can take water and liquified food orally for at least 14 days straight. His bandages are dirty now because he has been eating a little orally. I am taking him to the surgeon to have his dressing changed and a post-op visit on Wednesday, Sept 26.
Right now my focus is getting Baboo healthy. I am hopeful the feeding tube can be removed before 6 weeks passes.
In addition to this physical stress , I can only imagine the stress he feels being separated from Frank. They are best buddies and I hope to take Baboo to him for a visit as soon as possible.
Vet bills to date have been approximately $3000 and I expect at least another $2000, which will include expenses for a day time caretaker to come in and check on him while I am at work. I just wanted to help my brother in this uncertain time, and I fell for this little guy as soon as I picked him up. I feel terrible for what they both are going through. Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any donation you can make.
