Help support our family business, Baba’s Pantry
With the food industry being one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, our father is facing unprecedented challenges opening his restaurant, Baba’s Pantry. Small businesses, particularly restaurants, have had little assistance during this collective struggle and leverage crowd funding to continue the good work of feeding people in a pandemic. A new Kansas City ordinance is requiring unforeseen expenses that my father cannot meet. But with your help, we can reach our goal so my Baba can continue his lifelong joy of feeding people, giving back to his community, and preserving the rich historical food of Palestine.

The mission of Baba’s Pantry
Baba’s Pantry comes from 25 years of experience and expertise in the food industry. A labor of love, Baba’s mission is to make everyone feel like family and to feed them authentic recipes passed down from his mother. Baba’s food is filled with bold flavors and rich aromas—an array of colors, textures, and tastes just like home. From vegan shawarma and hummus to Falafel and rose-saffron kombucha—there is something for everyone.
You must try Baba’s amazing food
Baba means so much to our family, as well as the community he serves. His purpose is to continue his life’s work of feeding people. Growing up, my siblings and I spent a lot of time with Baba in his kitchen, but even more time in his pantry. Baba’s pantry was and continues to be a magical experience. The assortment of jams, pickled goods, sauces, and sweets made home feel like home. Food is Baba’s love language and I can’t wait for you to have an opportunity to experience it for yourself!
Who is Baba?
Seeking education and an opportunity to create a better life, Baba immigrated to this country as a Palestinian refugee in the late 1970s. He came to the United States alone as a young man, knowing little English without any friends or family here. He missed home and my Tayata’s (grandmother’s) cooking. Baba would often call his mother and get recipes over the phone. He began cooking these recipes and sharing his creations with professors, friends, and colleagues. Through food, Baba was able to bring people together, stay connected to his family and identity, and build friendships that would provide solace as he struggled being away from home.
As a parent, our wellbeing, health, and nutrition were his primary concerns. No matter the challenges he faced, our father always made sure to feed us healthy, home-cooked Palestinian food. Now as an adult, I’ve come to understand the hard work, struggle, and sacrifice immigrants—particularly refugees—go through in balancing their identities and heritage to provide for their families and achieve success in a new country.
Giving back to the community
My father is an avid supporter of Black Lives Matter and last summer hosted demonstrators at his facilities and raised funds for the Kansas City chapter through the sales of his specialty products. He has partnered with Whole Foods and is making and donating food to the Joplin, Missouri, hurricane disaster relief. Every year, he donates his time and effort to feed the Islamic center iftar. My father coordinates with local community organizers weekly to provide precooked food directly to those in need in the Kansas City Metro area. Additionally, as a proud immigrant, he is dedicated to employing other immigrants.
