When I look at this picture, all I can see is how accurately it captures the fortitude and shelter of a parent's love.
When Fred and Amanda Archer snapped this photo of their sweet family on a trip to Florida in February, they had no idea their lives were about to change dramatically.
Their daughter, Sophia, has recently been diagnosed with an inoperable lesion on her brain, which is causing a range of debilitating symptoms, including issues with speech, vision, balance, and swallowing.
In an attempt to get a more accurate diagnosis, the family decided to proceed with an incredibly invasive brain biopsy on the lesion, which is in a very complex spot. Unfortunately, after approximately two weeks of waiting, the results came back as "inconclusive," leaving them with more questions than answers. To make matters worse, during the biopsy, Sophia suffered a brain bleed that has caused additional complications, including weakness in her right side and the need to relearn basic motor skills.
The family is now working with a team of specialists in Boston to manage their daughter's care and get to the bottom of her condition. However, this means they are facing mounting medical bills, travel expenses, countless appointments and testing, and other costs associated with her treatment.
A month ago, this picture represented a carefree family having fun.
Now, it represents something altogether different: Two parents, embracing their children like a forcefield against the battle they are about to face.
As a community, we can come together to support this family during this difficult time. Any donation, no matter how small, can help ease the burden of their medical expenses and allow them to focus on Sophia's care.
