Flood Relief

Late afternoon on Thursday July 11th storms prompted flash flood warnings in our area.  Most of us not living or traveling near bodies of water were unconcerned.  Jessica Wolfe lives near a couple of creeks and rivers in Boyertown, Pa which was hit particularly hard during these storms.  The water rose to record levels flooding yards, homes, streets and bridges.  It floated cars and any other debris found in yards and streets.  Jessi, her husband and 4 children were miraculously not home when the storms hit and when they tried to get there, the water had risen so high around their house they were physically unable to walk or drive to get to it.  The grill, trampoline and all the rest of the contents in their yard washed away, replaced by debris, trash and contents from other people’s yards.  The oil tank leaked oil in the basement and first floor causing environmental remediation procedures.  Everything in the first floor of their home was destroyed.  The car parked in the driveway was totaled.

 

They are required to carry flood insurance but the deductible is $10,000 on the structure and another $10,000 on the contents.  While insurance will hopefully cover most of the cost beyond that there are always limitations and exclusions.  Not to mention the cost and inconvenience of the family and pets being displaced, loss of time from work to help rebuild, manage the contractors and the restoration process…etc.  Cleaning up the broken glass and other debris in the yard and surrounding area for example is their responsibility.
