"Just because someone carries it well does not mean it isn't heavy."

Pilar Arias is one of those people who makes you feel grateful to be alive because she has always known how to appreciate life. She is feisty, intelligent, hilarious, talented, incredibly beautiful and has a laugh that lightens up even the darkest day. Truly, the woman’s presence fills up a room with happiness.  She has always been a glass half full kind of human, always able to look at her adventurous life through a positive lens, making the best of everything. So, even when she started limping 5 years ago, she was still looking on the bright side. Even when, over the course of those five years, she saw numerous doctors whose incorrect diagnoses varied from a torn tendon in her knee, to a pinched nerve in her back.

She spent thousands of dollars on procedures that went nowhere because none had found the actual, underlying cause of her limp, joint pain and loss of balance. A year and a half ago, Pilar was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. PPMS is a form of the disease that worsens over time causing pain, cognitive issues and an inability to walk or move with ease. This diagnosis was a complete surprise to Pilar and, up until now, she has found little hope for a treatment with long term effects or the chance of reversing the damage the disease has already taken on her body.

Because she has a number of neurological symptoms, balance issues, pain when walking, fatigue, and spasticity she has not been able to work in over a year and has had to retire from her careers in both restaurants and acting. Throughout this entire terrifying time, Pilar has been an incredible advocate for her own health, receiving DMT infusions that help but do not deliver lasting results, seeing various doctors and seeking support through groups and friends. She has remained positive and confident and now finally, there is a treatment that provides great hope.

Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) is an intense but effective treatment that has proven to stop the progression of MS in 65-85% of the patients who have received it. The procedure is aggressive, taking up to a year to recover from and will require Pilar to travel out of the country.  She and her doctors feel confident that this treatment is the strongest choice for her victory against the progression of MS and may also reverse some the cumulative neurological damage it has already caused in her body. As we all know, medical care is astronomically expensive and, on top of it all, Pilar is currently fighting a bureaucratic battle with the Social Security Administration. Her claim for disability keeps getting denied even though there is sufficient evidence that she cannot perform any of the duties outlined in her vocational experience and even though her limitations would interfere with any substantial gain from a different form of employment. She’s doing everything in her power including enlisting the help of an attorney to be financially independent during her long recovery.

We project that treatment and travel expenses alone will cost over $70,000 along with another year away from work and the medical bills that have already been accumulated, Pilar needs help.
