Penny Keegan was an amazing woman who touched many lives. Everyone who knew Penny was truely better for knowing her. For those of you who did not have the fortune of knowing her personally, here is a bit of her story. Penny is the second of four children. She was born in northern California and her adolecescent and young adult years were spent in western Washington. At the age of 10 months Penny was diagnosed with Polio which paralyzed her right leg and hip. At the age of 9 she had multiple surgeries, at Shriner's Hospital, on her left leg to stunt its growth to increase the chances that she would be able to walk with some normalcy. After these surgeries she could no longer bend her knee beyond 90 degrees and she would live out her life with continually worsening range of motion and pain. She went on to complete her education at Pacific Lutheran University with a BA in Recreational Therapy. She hoped to work with people with special needs and/or the elderly. After completing her degree she married and had two healthy children. At 4 months pregnant with her second child she had an attack of severe pain and ended up having surgery to remove her gallbladder. After raising her children and influencing the lives of many more, she was diagnosed with an 'agressive form' of Uterine Cancer. Shortly after her diagnosis she had a hysterectomy to remove 2 softball sized masses and other malignant tissue. This surgery was not with out complications and 3 days later she developed a blood clot in her lungs and was started on an agressive regimine of blood thinners and the first of numerous rounds of Chemo. It was not 6 months later that a CT and CT guided biopsy revealed that cancerous uterine cells have migrated to her omentum and had begun forming masses. She had and omentectomy a few months later. A month later she chose to seek multiple second opinions but was told there were no other treatment options for her. Shortly after this, she started the second of 6 rounds of Chemo treatments and tried various other self researched treatments. There was no improvement. Despite these many obstactles placed before her, her zest for life and for her family were contagious. She was a loving wife and mother who wanted nothing more than to spend a long life loving her family and her Lord. She was very involved in her community, church and various charitable organizations. It was in the moments when she was helping others that she was in her element. Up until her final days, she was more worried about her friends and loved ones than she ever seemed to be about herself. In the end, her desire to beat Cancer paled in comparison to her desire to spend her remaining time enjoying the people and activities she loved. She went to be with her Lord, on April 17, 2017, shortly after stopping Chemo . She was 61.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond her control, Penny was unable to obtain life insurance and so the financial strain of end of life expenses is weighing heavily on our family. Any help you are able to provide is graciouly appreciated. The money raised here will go towards a modest funeral service, the cost of cremation and end of life expenses.
Thank you all.
