On June 13, 2014 Paul collapsed at his home. Steve immediately called 911 and Paul was transported to Meritus Medical Center. Upon arrival at the hospital it was discovered that Paul was having a major stroke. Physician's there acted quickly and Paul was given a drug called TPA to dissolve the blood clot that caused the stroke. Paul was then admitted to the hospital and evaluated throughout his stay for damages caused by the stroke. Initially Paul lost control of his entire right side. His speech was most affected and he was unable to speak at all. He is now home and is undergoing intensive physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. His physician expects his recovery to be long and Paul has been told that it could be up to one year before his speech would become more normal. He is not able to work during this time.
Although Paul has health insurance his policy has a $10,000 deductible and then only pays a portion of his medical bills. It also does NOT cover any of his therapy. His medical bills are arriving daily and could exceed over $100,000 in out-of-pocket expenses. You can only imagine the stress this has added to Paul and Steve in an already extremely stressful situation.
As most of you know, Paul has worked very hard his entire life. But when faced with a life changing medical event, it is no longer possible for him to work. This means that Paul and Steve have lost an entire income and are now faced with mounting medical bills.
Giving back has always been a way of life for Paul Deputy. Being engaged in building a strong and growing community has been something Paul truly believe's in. Paul has worked hard to support charity events and even hosts events at The Gourmet Goat, which he and Steve own. It is time for us to give back to Paul for all he has done for each of us and for our community. Please consider making a secure contribution to help cover Paul's medical bills. He would be the first to do the same for us. We now have an opportunity to embrace him and show him the love we all have for him.
