Help Save Our Home!

One year ago tomorrow, on December 3, 2017,  heaven gained an angel and my family lost one of the most important people in our lives. Due to an unexpected visit to the hospital, my grandmother spent Thanksgiving there last year and never returned home to us. She fought long and hard to stay with her family, but God had other plans for her. She was reunited with her husband, my grandfather, who passed years before her. This caused a granddaughter to live without grandparents and the three of their children to be parentless. The last thing that remains in their memory is their home in which we’ve shared so many memories.

My grandmother gave birth to a disabled son, my Uncle Phil. He lived with my grandparents his whole life. My grandmothers death not only made him an orphan, it also made him a disabled man living in a house all alone. After she passed, at 19 years old, I decided to move in with my uncle. It has now been a year that I’ve been living with my uncle in my grandparents’ home, keeping my uncle company and trying to help him fill the void of losing the person that’s been by his side since he was born.

Unfortunately for us, our world just got turned upside down. Last week we discovered that our boiler was producing toxic carbon monoxide due to a crack that was caused by a water leak and the flame being forced to push out to the front of the boiler. No one knows how long this could have been going on for, if it wasn’t for our carbon monoxide detector who knows what could have happened. The situation was so dangerous that PSE&G had to disconnect the entire boiler and turn it off. Therefore, we’ve been left without heat with winter soon approaching. We’ve talked to several plumbers, including the PSE&G emergency tech that initially came to see us, there’s no way to repair our boiler. The only solution is to buy a new one, which is usually around $6,000. Which is something that we just can’t afford right now.

We’ve thought of other options: space heaters, electric baseboards, etc. But none of those can beat the cold that will inevitably freeze our pipes this winter, causing them to burst and flood/ruin our home. Unless we can find a way to come up with money for a new boiler, we’re going to have to evacuate my grandmothers house and find different places to live. Not only are we mourning due to the one year anniversary of my grandmother’s death, but we’re struggling to keep her house alive as well.

We usually aren’t the type of family to have our hands out or ask anybody for anything, but in a situation like this we just don’t know what else to do. Any dollar, nickel, or penny would help put us one step closer to being able to stay in our home this winter. To any person that donates, please know that you made this holiday season a little more bearable for us and our broken hearts.
