Fundraising for Blind Care Center, Nepal

Close your eyes for five minutes. Keeping your eyes closed…imagine you belong to a low income family and have no access to any resources, education, or support to make a living. How do you feel? How long were you able to close your eyes?

By putting ourselves in others' shoes, we become more empathetic to their situation. This is where I found myself when I heard of these blind children in my home country of Nepal.

WHY I AM FUNDRAISING

According to Nepal Blind Association, there are close to 200,000 visually impaired people in Nepal, 40,000 of them being children. However, only children (10%) receive education in special or integrated schools. Education is only a dream for 90% of kids who come from low income families. Projects for less fortunate children with severe disorders are rare where there are other problems like unemployment. Due to lack of resources, cultural stereotype and only minimal governmental support, these children are forced to live in the streets or even a darker way of life.

It was surprising to know that it only takes six months to learn Braille (writing system which enables blind and partially sighted people to read and write through touch). In Nepal, it takes $600 dollars per month to house, feed, educate, and teach job skills to ten children. I know I cannot help all the children at once, but my goal is to help ten children at a time and hopefully make a difference by helping them obtain an education in order to make a living.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO:

100% of the donation will go directly to the Blind Care Center in Surkhet, Nepal. The Blind Care Center in Surkhet, Nepal is operated by Mr. Jeewan Kumar Shakya.
