To know Ben and the Lawrence family, is to know love, strength, optimism, kindness, and compassion. The Lawrence family is made up of Ben and Nicole, with children Bailey (18), Gabby (15), Grayer (11), Benson (9), and Gianna (8). Our family met theirs through our daughter Harper. Harper and the youngest of the Lawrence clan, Gianna (Gigi) were in first grade together back in 2018. Gigi and Harper struck up a friendship and we later learned her father, Ben was going through cancer treatment. That was when we were introduced to the entire family and Ben’s story.
For those of you that are new to their story, on March 13th, 2018 Ben was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). It is a type of cancer that starts in blood-forming cells of the bone marrow. After trying and failing multiple treatments over the past 2 ½ years, he will be undergoing a bone marrow transplant at Mayo Clinic in January. Ben will be in the hospital prior to and immediately following the transplant, while Nicole will be staying in a hotel room nearby. She will be making daily trips to be with Ben and learn how to be his caretaker. After Ben is stable, he will then move to the hotel room with Nicole where she will be his primary caretaker with daily trips to the hospital until day 100 if all goes well. In total, Ben and Nicole will be away from their home and children for 3.5 months leaving them to be cared for with family and friends.
As you can imagine, this will be incredibly hard on the entire family in more ways than one…emotionally and financially. Please consider donating this holiday season to remove some financial worries that come with extensive cancer treatments and allow them to spend their energy on Ben’s healing and loving their family. Insurance helps with a good portion of the medical bills, but there are so many other expenses that need to be taken care of. Funds will go to helping with out-of-pocket medical expenses, hotel room, medical supplies, etc.
As Nicole and Ben have said, while this is not the hand we would have chosen for our lives we hope to learn from it and find ways to inspire and impact others. Thank you to all of you for your love, support, and encouragement so far. Thanks for joining us here as we navigate this road together.
