Raise for a new Wheelchair

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Maxine. In 2016, something strange happened. I stopped being able to eat. It was stomach pain at first, which quickly evolved into almost nonstop nausea and vomiting. Then, a total shutdown of my stomach. At the time, I had no idea what I was experiencing was the beginning of a journey that would take me through multiple diagnoses, countless hospital stays, numerous medical interventions, and a complete change in my lifestyle. The symptoms evolved. I was diagnosed with gastroparesis and put on a PEJ feeding tube, which continues to provide almost all of my sustenance to this day. I faced the gradual loss of my abilities, including my ability to walk and perform usual motor activities. I am being tested for an autoimmune disorder called Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, along with other comorbidities, and am now facing the incredible challenge of outgrowing my parent's insurance.

In 2021, I bought my first wheelchair. It was a foldable wheelchair that needed someone to push me at all times. During the worst of my symptoms, when I was flaring up, losing large amounts of weight, and struggling to accept that my entire way of interacting with the world would have to change, this wheelchair was crucial in giving me a sense of freedom and access to the world. On my worst days, when I would usually be bedridden, I could go outside, breathe fresh air, and walk my dog with my partner - I stopped missing important doctor appointments and was even able to make it some necessary treatments that I usually could not access during severe flare-ups. However, this chair was not designed to be manually pushed, and unfortunately, due to schedule changes, my partner can no longer accompany me on these ventures.

I am seeking independence with and acceptance of my chronic health conditions. A manual, custom wheelchair, designed for my body, would be a huge tool, as a mobility aid, allowing me independence, freedom, and access while learning to live with my disabilities. Thank you so much for considering a donation. All the funds would go directly into the purchasing of a manual, custom-fitted wheelchair.
