Logan's Journey with T1DM

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Monika and Bryan has been my best friend for nearly 16 years. Our friendship has deepened throughout adulthood and what we have in common has evolved into how much we love our spouses and our children - never in a million years did I think we'd be swapping parent advice!!

Bryan and April thought Valentine's Day weekend would be a little crummy because their little guy was sick but they had a parent's worst nightmare come true. It's a feeling only parents can understand - you feel crazy for taking your child back to the doctor for the second or third time, hold your breath while they tell you it's just a virus, and a sigh of relief as you head back to the car thinking "well, I'm crazy... but at least he's okay." What was supposed to be a simple viral illness or ear infection turned into a very lethargic and sick little man, a few ER visits, and an ambulance ride to a pediatric intenstive care unit at Beaumont. The diagnosis? Type I Diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis - a condition that has taken the lives of many diabetics.

No one expects that their child will be sick or need extensive medical care for the rest of their lives. Mainstream media also leads us to believe that diabetes is "no big deal" and easily managed. As a physician assistant, I'm here to tell you it's not. The road for them is going to be long and hard. There are going to be many sleepless nights, doctors visits, unpaid time off of work, and huge lifestyle changes in their future.

Anyone who knows Bryan and April knows they would never ask for help but truly they are going to need it. I'm asking from the bottom of my heart to please donate a few dollars and a whole lot of prayers so that this event doesn't create the additional burden of financial strain. There are many immediate costs to them for medical supplies for Logan not to mention the numerous bills from the ER visits, critical care hospital stay and specialist appointments all with a several thousand dollar insurance deductible and unpaid time off from work adding to that.

I know that although they very reluctantly agreed to this help, they will appreciate all of the love and support. I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Keep the prayers coming! Bryan, April, and Logan are going to be tested but will surely come out stronger.
