Hi everyone, This is Dean’s brother Cody. I had someone suggest to set up a go fund me for Dean and his family, and knowing Dean he would be mad at me doing this for him. On Monday night he suffered a fall getting out of bed. He went to the hospital and they did a ct scan to check him out and they diagnosed him with a severe concussion. His ct scan was clear and all of the other symptoms he was having supported that finding. Fast forward to Wednesday morning his symptoms had gotten worse instead of showing improvement. He developed some weakness on his left side and with his balance. My sister in-law took him back to the er to be reevaluated and fortunately when they seen him walk in they took him straight back to be seen. The ER doctor was concerned and ordered another CT scan to see if there were any changes, and unfortunately there were. He had developed swelling on the left side of his brain. At this point the ER doctor had him transferred to UT so he could be seen by a neurosurgeon just in case he needed surgery. Once arriving to UT he was seen by a neurosurgeon and told them he was going to run some more test on Dean to make sure there wasn’t anything else going on, and they were going to admit him to ICU. A little while later a ICU doctor came in and told them that Dean had suffered a stroke, and that they believed that he had suffered them in his sleep Monday and when he got up to go the restroom it had affected his balance causing him to fall. We questioned why didn’t the stroke appear in the first ct scan and they said it takes around 24 hours for them to show in a ct after occurring. So after being admitted to ICU they started to do more test. On early Thursday morning they did a echo on him they found that his heart is only working at 25%, and they would need to address it once everything was cleared by a neurosurgeon, because they believe that it was what caused the clot that caused the stroke. Well fast forward until early Friday morning. The doctors had been doing routine CT scans every 24 hours to make sure his brain wasn’t continuing to swell. Because we were informed that his brain could continue to swell for anywhere between 5-7 days after the stroke occurred. When the results came in on Friday morning his brain had swelled drastically from Thursday to Friday. It was at the point the has to be rushed to emergency surgery to remove a section of skull to allow for the swelling, and along with placing a drain to help relieve pressure. Well unfortunately things became worse. Even with the skull removed the brain was continuing to swell and to the point that if it didn’t stop we could lose him. The neurosurgeon started him on a aggressive treatment of a high sodium saline solution to try to reduce the swelling. The doctor said it would be our last ditch effort to save Dean. Well by the grace of God it appears that the treatment is working. The neurosurgeon is pleased with how things are looking and are hoping to remove the drain in the next few days. Dean has been alert some and knows who we are. Unfortunately he still has a very long road to recovery but we are so thankful that he is still alive. With all of that being said Dean unfortunately will be out of work for quite sometime with rehab and potentially heart surgery. Unfortunately his work doesn’t offer short term disability. So therefore Dean won’t have any income coming in other then his wife’s. Leaving them in a terrible situation with all of their bills and along with everything that will be incurred from this. As much as I hate to ask for a thing from anyone I’m asking this. If you find it in your heart and are able to donate we all would be so thankful, and if you’re not able to we fully understand and just ask for continued prayers for him.
