While preparing to step into her new life in Washington, a routine health exam turned into two months of testing and an alarming diagnosis - a form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).
Emma has been through a lot in her life thus far, but has expressed how hard this all-consuming fear has been. She finds herself to be incredibly lucky that it was caught “early,” but the tumor is already a grade 3/3- meaning it’s aggressive and wants to spread. Further testing revealed another area nearby with the same type of cancer which unfortunately left them with little left to save, meaning what she thought was a lumpectomy would now be a mastectomy and likely require radiation. This has been a complex process that’s required four biopsies, countless mammograms/ultrasounds/MRI’s - and the hard part is only just about to start.
Emma had saved up funds for her move to WA from CA and announced to her clients her departure date. These funds were immediately wiped out to pay for medical bills. Additionally, doctors initially stated her surgery would be in 6 weeks but it is now scheduled for Monday, August 5th. This leaves little time for preparation mentally or financially.
Emma is a skilled hair stylist with a jam-packed clientele. As an independent contractor, there are no safety nets in place for medical leave coverage. She will be unable to work during surgery recoveries and well as potential additional treatments. Her healing time for the initial surgery will be 4-6 weeks, with two surgeries to follow with the chances of potential radiation or chemotherapy. The timeline is ever changing but is estimated to be around 8-9 months.
We are looking to cover at minimum, 4 months worth of Emma’s rent for her home, her rental chair at work and bare minimum necessities while she is unable to work. Anything beyond that can go towards medical bills and provide peace of mind while she summits this metaphorical mountain. Emma’s loved ones want her to be able to focus on healing and recovery rather than if she can pay rent. She is the friend with the biggest heart. She is there for every person with a struggle, friend or not, and it is her turn to be rallied around and supported.
Any donation to our sweet friend is deeply appreciated, no matter the size. You will make a difference. Thank you!
