On Memorial Day weekend, Brian was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon cancer which had also spread to his liver. Since then, he has undergone months of chemotherapy. The treatment has managed to shrink his tumors to the point that the doctors at Mayo Clinic are confident they can remove both the liver and colon tumors in one surgery, hopefully within the next few weeks. This is amazing news!
With the love and support of so many, especially his wife Sonja, Brian has remained fearless in a battle he never expected to fight. While effective, the treatments, procedures and upcoming surgeries have incurred thousands in medical costs, with many more months of recovery and additional treatments and surgeries needed in the future.
Unfortunately, Brian has been unable to work, and will be losing his income this week, leaving Sonja as their sole provider. While she is working to pay the bills of day to day life, they struggle with all the medical bills that continue to mount as Brian fights his battle.
Brian and Sonja moved from Milwaukee to Savannah several years ago. While they are surrounded by an incredibly supportive and loving group of friends and co-workers, they lack the closeness of their families back home. We would love to throw a benefit to help fund Brian's fight, but his need to be near Mayo Clinic makes it impossible to bring them here. This page seemed the best way to reach all of his family and friends and give them the opportunity to help. We are hoping to raise enough money to help pay this and next year’s medical bills, and deductibles which could surpass $15,000.
In the words of Brian's son Alex:
“We’ve all heard my dad say, when seeing the best in someone, ‘that’s the type of person who will take the shirt off their back for you’. But every time he said that about someone else, he was also describing his own character: a limitless worker that would be there at a second’s notice to help his friends and family. . .plain and simple. A father, a husband, a friend, a mentor, a leader.”
Please help if you can, and if you are going to give him the shirt off your back, make sure it's a Packers shirt :)
