We are House of Azania - a group of artists and makers from South African Townships and London warehouses. We have come together to make a space where likeminded people can share and collaborate on making new art, music and performance.
We have built a stage for Afrikaburn’s event in the Tankwa Karoo desert - and will be performing a diverse cabaret show. Our dream is to be able to support artists from South Africa beyond the event, to develop their practice and have more creative opportunities.
Cabaret is silly, powerful and playful. Our platform is a queer focused space but inclusive of all artists. At any art event, we feel it is important to have queer representation and a place to celebrate queer identity and art. We are also going to be supporting 14 artists from Soweto (South Africas largest township) who may face barriers in accessing an event like AfrikaBurn but would like to be involved and have a platform to share their artwork.
Artists we are supporting create:
Live music
Cabaret performance
Dancers
Fashion shows
Live art
DJs
Spoken word
Film
All of the funding will go directly to the artists to support:
Lighting equipment
Sound equipment
DJ equipment
Art materials (e.g. fabric for costume, paint for live art)
Basic needs to ensure no barriers to attending events (e.g. phone, food, transport)
Higher-quality stage equipment and materials allow artists more room for creativity and play and produces a better show for the audience.
For budget transparency, we have been awarded some limited funding from AfrikaBurn to support the build of the stage for their event, but all build crew and artists are volunteering their time to the project.
