Ay-up Ian's 'Neck' Steps

The outpouring of love and support since Ian had his stroke in November from family and friends has been overwhelming. You have all on numerous occasions asked Grace and I how you could help and now is your lucky day. The daily messages of support have helped us through undoubtedly the hardest time of our lives.
Ian's determination to get up and mobile has been beyond impressive and he is well on the road to a recovery, but he still has some way to go. His Yorkshire determination (stubbornness) has definitely proved to be the right medicine and we as a family are so proud as to how he has taken on all the challenges and curved balls he has been thrown in the last few months.
It is planned for Ian to return home to us next week (fingers crossed) and we are preparing best we can to ensure that he has everything he needs to make his transition home as straightforward and comfortable as possible.
In terms of how Ian has improved since his initial stroke, we are now delighted to tell you that he is walking with a stick, on occasion unaided and is working on his muscle strength every day. Unfortunately when the stroke occurred Ian experienced almost complete loss of his gag reflex and has been diagnosed as having something call dysphagia. This is seriously affecting his ability to eat and drink so he is currently nil by mouth and is being fed by a feeding tube into his stomach.
There are a few home improvement projects on the cards to help Ian move freely around our home. This will also give him the independence he needs as his mobility gets better.
On the medical side we have heard great things about a Throat Therapy Technique (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) which can radically improve loss of gag reflex. We have identified an expert in this field who can deliver the therapy in Middlesex and we hope to have Ian attend the clinic for at least two sessions a week over the course of the next few months.
On one hand as a family we hate to be asking for financial support from you but on the other you have all repeatedly asked how you can help Ian. If you are able to give something then we would be very appreciative as a family as you would be helping give Ian a better quality of life in the months ahead.
Again thank you all for your amazing support and outpouring of love and friendship these last few months, without it managing the day to day would have been so much harder. It's clear to us that Ian means a lot to you all and we look forward as a family to getting life back to some sense of normality and one day watching Ian tuck into some lovely scran after a 20k bike ride!!!
Much love Grace, Viv and Ian xxx
p.s. We would like to restrict this message to friends and family with whom Ian has a close relationship, so we kindly ask that you do not re-post this message on social media. Thanks
