Ayudemos a Rafael Lugo a recuperarse de neumonía

Les presento a mi suegro, Rafael Lugo Felice. Es una de las personas más fuertes que he conocido en mi vida. Superó el síndrome de Guillain-Barré a una edad muy temprana y sobrevivió a una deficiencia genética de potasio siendo el primer diagnóstico en su familia y también el primer sobreviviente.

Es abogado e historiador y, por tanto, un gran narrador. Era un profesor en una de las universidades más prestigiosas de Venezuela, la UCV. Era devoto de sus alumnos y muy apasionado. También formó parte de 'La República del Este', una de las mayores organizaciones de poesía en la historia de Venezuela.

Hace unos meses, tuvo un ACV y nadie está seguro de cómo sobrevivió a los 82 años; tenía presión arterial alta, diabetes leve y desequilibrios electrolíticos, pero en sus palabras "es tan fuerte como Napoleón" y se ha recuperado lentamente. Sin embargo, tiene algunos déficits mentales que lo obligaron a jubilarse, perder la capacidad de caminar largas distancias y estar confinado a una silla de ruedas.

Rafael ha formado una hermosa familia, tiene una esposa increíble y 2 hijas y me considera su tercera hija.

He sido recibida en esta familia con un amor y una aceptación tan incondicionales que les estaré eternamente agradecida.

Hace poco viajamos a Venezuela para pasar las Navidades con mis suegros ya que han tenido un año difícil en tema salud y no los habíamos visto desde antes que comenzara la pandemia. El 5 de enero, Rafael se cayó y se dislocó el codo, se fracturó la muñeca y requirió cirugía. No tenía seguro médico y su familia está endeudada con más de USD$ 19,000 en gastos médicos.

Esta cirugía deterioró considerablemente su salud, ya que ahora está confinado al reposo en cama, debe inyectarse insulina en cada comida y usar pañales; también muestra algunos signos de demencia temprana y necesita una enfermera por tiempo indefinido. Su salud actual es muy frágil pero él es muy fuerte y tiene muchas ganas de vivir.

Ayer, el 13 de enero, tuvo que ser readmitido a la clínica por presentar una neumonía muy fuerte. Está estable pero al parecer va a necesitar permanecer allí varios días.

A cualquiera que esté leyendo esto y pueda ayudar, estaré eternamente agradecida y sé que mi esposa, mi cuñada y mi suegra también lo estarán. Si estás atado financieramente y no puedes donar, por favor comparte esta historia para que pueda llegar a otros.

Meet my father-in-law, Rafael Lugo Felice. He is one of the strongest people I have met in my life. He overcome Guillain-Barre syndrome at a very young age and survived a genetic potassium deficiency being the first diagnosis in his family and also the first survivor.

He is an attorney and a historian and therefore, a great storyteller. He was a hell of a teacher at one of the most prestigious universities in Venezuela, The UCV. He was devoted to his students and very passionate. He was also part of ´La Republica del Este', one of the greatest poetry organizations in Venezuela's history.

A few months ago, he had a stroke and no one is sure how he survived it at 82, having high blood pressure, mild diabetes, and electrolytes imbalance but in his words 'he is as strong as Napoleon' and he has slowly recovered having some mental deficits that forced him to retire, lose his ability to walk long distances and be confined to a wheelchair.

Rafael has built a beautiful family, having an amazing wife and 2 daughters and he considers me his third daughter because I'm married to his youngest, Clementina.

I have been received in this family with such unconditional love and acceptance that I'm forever grateful to them.

We recently traveled to Venezuela to spend the holidays with my in-laws given that they have had a hard year healthwise and we had not seen them since before the pandemic started. On January 5th, he took a fall and dislocated his elbow, fractured his wrist needing surgery. He was uninsured and his family is indebted with over USD$19,000 in medical expenses.

This surgery deteriorated his health considerably as he is now confined to bed rest, having to take insulin at every meal, wearing diapers, showing some signs of early dementia, and needing a nurse indefinitely. His current health is very fragile but he is very strong and has a great will to live.

Yesterday, January 13th, he had to be readmitted to the hospital due to severe pneumonia. He is stable but he will need to stay a few days in the hospital.
