Hello, my name is Maria Laura, I am 26 years old, Venezuelan, and I want to stay alive. At 6 years old I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), a genetic condition mainly affecting my nervous system. At a very young age, I decided that my diagnosis would not define my life, I was always very active and worked to support myself financially. At the age of 15, I lost my mother to cancer and fell into depression. In addition to this, I never had the financial means to get under control with a specialist, Neurofibromatosis type 2 is a very expensive disease.

Unfortunately, this condition began to complicate my daily activities, and at the age of 16, I began to develop a 3.5 cm vestibular schwannoma in my left ear. A schwannoma is a tumor that develops along the nerve that carries information from the ear internal to the brain (the auditory nerve). This tumor caused the total loss of my hearing capacity in my left ear at 25 years old. Then the same type of tumor developed in my right ear, causing me to lose at least 70% of my hearing in this ear. Both tumors have also caused me problems controlling my balance, problems controlling the muscles of the face, and weakness in lifting my hands or feet, which prevents me from doing my daily tasks. My disease continues to progress and become dangerous. I have had serious falls that have caused me severe injuries. It has also affected me physically with benign tumors on my hands, neck, nose, chest, and head.

There is no medicine to control my disease, I can only undergo a Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) that has a value of $11,000 to remove the bilateral tumors in both ears. The remaining $500 is to cover medical supplies. I currently live in Venezuela, where you survive on a salary of $15. The economic situation of my country and my condition, which prevents me from working, makes it very difficult to pay for this expensive operation. If my bilateral tumors continue to grow internally in my ears, I could go blind or suffer from hydrocephalus, which would cause my death. Brain stereotactic radiosurgery is the only option to save my life. My family helps me financially, but it is not enough to cover the surgery. Hola, mi nombre es Maria Laura, tengo 26 años soy Venezolana y tengo muchas esperanzas de vivir. A los 6 años de edad fui diagnosticada con Neurofibromatosis tipo 2 (NF2) una afección genética que afecta principalmente mi sistema nervioso. A muy corta edad decidi que mi diagnostico no iba a definir vida, siempre fui muy activa y trabajaba para sustentarme economicamente. A los 15 años perdi a mi madre a causa de un cancer y cai en depresion lo que me llevo a poner mi enfermedad en segundo plano. Ademas de esto, nunca tuve los medios economicos para ponerme en control con un especialista, la Neurofibromatosis tipo 2 es una enfermedad muy costosa.

Lamentablemente, esta condicion empezo a complicar mi dia a dia y a los 16 años empece a desarrollar un schwannoma vestibular de 3,5 cm en mi oido izquierdo, un schwannoma es un tumor que se desarrolla a lo largo del nervio que transporta información desde el oído interno hasta el cerebro (el nervio auditivo). Este tumor causo la perdida total de mi capacidad auditiva en el oido izquierdo a los 25 años. Luego se me desarrollo el mismo tipo de tumor en mi oido derecho haciendome perder al menos 70% de mi capacidad auditiva en este oido. Ambos tumores me han causado ademas problemas de equilibrio, problemas para controlar los músculos del rostro y debilidad para levantar las manos o los pies, lo cual me impide realizar mis tareas del dia a dia. Mi enfermedad sigue progresando y tornandose peligrosa, he tenido caidas graves que me han causado lesiones severas, tambien me ha afectado fisicamente con tumores benignos en mis manos, cuello, nariz, pecho y cabeza.

No existe medicinas para controlar mi enfermedad, solo puedo someterme a una Radiocirugía estereotáctica cerebral que tiene un valor de $11.000 para eliminar los tumores bilaterales en ambos oidos. Los $500 restantes son para cubrir insumos medicos. Actualmente vivo en Venezuela, donde se sobrevive con un sueldo minimo de $15. La situacion economica de mi pais y mi condicion la cual me impide trabajar hace muy dificil pagar esta costosa operacion. Si mis tumores bilaterales siguen creciendo internamente en mis oidos podria quedar ciega o sufrir de una hidrocefalia que causaria mi muerte. La Radiocirugía estereotáctica cerebral es la unica opcion para salvar mi vida. Mi familia me ayuda economicamente pero no es suficiente para cubrir la cirugia, por lo cual, recurro a este medio para pedir tu generosa ayuda para salvar mi vida.
