Hola a todos! Somos María y Ángel Gonzalez y estamos recaudando dinero para nuestra madre Luz Marina Morales quien necesita atención médica urgente. Tristemente para nosotros, hace 1 semana a nuestra mamá le diagnosticaron cáncer de Mieloma Múltiple – FASE 1.
TRASFONDO FAMILIAR:
Nuestra familia vive en Venezuela y, como todos saben, las condiciones económicas y principalmente de Salud son extremadamente difíciles. El sistema de salud es precário y toda la asistencia médica es privada y con un costo demasiado elevado. Tristemente, Vivir el día a día en Venezuela es una lucha y la actual pandemia de COVID lo hace aún más difícil.
Mi Madre es 1 de 10 hermanos. Ella nació en la pobreza extrema. Se casó con mi padre a la edad de 25 años y con mucho trabajo de los dos, nos sacaron adelante. Toda la vida de nuestra madre la ha dedicado al cuidado de su esposo y sus dos hijos y para nosotros ella lo es todo.
ANTECEDENTES MÉDICOS:
Nuestra madre desde hace muchos años fue diagnosticada de Osteoporosis y en Julio de 2020 sufrió una fractura espontánea en una vértebra. Estuvo en cama durante casi un mes con un dolor insoportable, donde el Dr. que la atendía solicito con urgencia someterla a una operación llamada Vertebroplastia. Finalmente después de lograr recaudar con toda la familia el dinero necesario para la intervención, insumos y todo lo relacionado a tratamientos post cirugía, se logró ejecutar la misma para Agosto 2020.
Luego de la cirugía, que aparentemente había sido exitosa, y luego de continuos dolores de nuestra madre, los médicos decidieron hacerle una biopsia ósea obligatoria de la vértebra fracturadas para detectar el motivo de dicho dolor, donde el resultado final fue: Cáncer. Los resultados fueron entregados a nosotros apenas el Viernes 11 de Septiembre 2020, donde diagnostican Células cancerosas de Mieloma Múltiple. Adicional la Dra. Leditza Chourio (Oncóloga) de mi madre también advirtió que si hay signos de mieloma múltiple en la columna vertebral, es muy probable que el cáncer esté en otras partes de su cuerpo.
¿QUÉ SE NECESITA?
Nuestra madre ahora necesitará Radiografía AP del antebrazo, AP y lateral del brazo (ambos), AP y lateral del cráneo, AP y lateral del fémur (ambos), AP y lateral de la pierna (ambos), tórax óseo Ecocardiograma Examen de médula ósea, prueba de orina de proteína de Bence-Jones y prueba de inmunohistoquímica (IHC). Esta prueba nos ayudará a dar con un diagnóstico más claro y poder conocer el seguimiento del tratamiento para nuestra madre.
TRATAMIENTO:
El tratamiento para esta enfermedad ósea comenzará con Quimioterapia. Si las áreas de hueso dañado continúan causando síntomas, se puede usar radioterapia. Mi madre también necesitará tratamientos de apoyo, como transfusiones para tratar los recuentos bajos de células sanguíneas y antibióticos. En el primer diagnóstico del doctor, nos indica que nuestra madre también recibiría tratamiento a largo plazo. Ésto se conoce como tratamiento de mantenimiento y ayuda a retrasar el regreso del mieloma. Diversos fármacos serán necesarios y útiles para tratar el mieloma y evitar el regreso del mismo, una vez sea eliminado.

FAMILY BACKGROUND:
Our family lives in Venezuela and as you all probably know, the economic conditions and political situation in my country is extremely dire. Unlike other western countries, we no longer have a general healthcare system. All healthcare is private and very expensive. Living day to day in Venezuela is a struggle and the current COVID pandemic is making an already dire situation that much worse.
Our mother, Luz, is one of 10 siblings. She was born into poverty but has overcome many hardships in her life. My parents married when my Mom was 25 years old and since that time, her whole life has been dedicated to caring for her husband and two children.
MEDICAL BACKGROUND:
Our mother has osteoporosis. In July 2020 she suffered a fracture in her lower spinal vertebrae. She was bedridden for almost a month in excruciating pain. We finally raised enough money so she could go for an operation to repair the fracture in August 2020. The doctors did a mandatory bone biopsy of the fractured vertebrae to check for any signs of cancer.
We received the results of the biopsy on Friday, September 11th. The biopsy shows Multiple Myeloma cancer cells. My mother's oncologist also advised that if there are signs of Multiple Myeloma in her spine then it is highly likely the cancer may be in other parts of her body.
UPCOMING TESTING:
Our mother will now need AP x-ray of the forearm, AP and lateral arm (both), AP and lateral of the skull, AP and lateral of the femur (both), AP and lateral of the leg (both), bony thorax Echocardiogram. Our mother will also need a Bone marrow examination, Bence-Jones protein urine test & Immunohistochemistry (IHC) testing.This testing will diagnose and check on multiple myeloma.
TREATMENT:
Treatment for this bone disease (bisphosphonates) will start with chemo. If the areas of damaged bone continue to cause symptoms, radiation therapy may be used. My mother will also need supportive treatments, such as transfusions to treat low blood cell counts, and antibiotics and sometimes intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for infections. Our mother may also be given long-term treatment. This is known as maintenance treatment, and helps delay the return of the myeloma, but it can cause serious side effects. Many drugs and drug combinations can be useful in treating myeloma. If one drug combination stops working (or the myeloma comes back), other drugs can be tried.
