"Mi nombre es Liliana Gallegos, soy psicóloga, tengo 61 años y vivo en Lima, Perú. Hoy estoy atravesando uno de los momentos más difíciles de mi vida—a nivel físico, emocional y económico. Lo que comenzó como una afeccion tratable en el pie ha evolucionado hacia un proceso doloroso y traumático que hoy pone en riesgo la pérdida de mi pie izquierdo.

En febrero de 2025, me sometí a una cirugía para remover un Neuroma de Morton.

Cabe mencionar que soy diabética y según me indicaron, sería tomado en cuenta con las debidas precauciones. Al principio, todo parecía ir bien. Pero poco después de que me retiraran los puntos, la herida se abrió nuevamente y comenzó a infectarse. El 13 de marzo, acudí al consultorio de mi médico en la Clínica SANNA de San Borja, Lima. A pesar de los signos evidentes de una infeccion incipiente, el médico solo me recetó antibióticos orales y me envió a casa. El dolor se volvió insoportable y, en pocos días, el cuarto dedo comenzó a ennegrecerse.

Al cabo de las siguientes semanas, tuve que ser intervenida de urgencia y hospitalizada posteriormente y tuvieron que amputarme 2 dedos.

Durante los casi tres meses que estuve hospitalizada, pasé por:

• 21 cirugías (entre amputaciones y limpiezasquirúrgicas)

• Varias rondas de anestesia raquídea y general

• Aplicación de un dispositivo VAC para controlar la infección y promover el crecimiento del tejido

• Incontables horas de dolor físico y trauma emocional

Actualmente tengo una gran herida abierta en el empeine de mi pie. La herida sigue sin cerrar y no tiene piel que permita la cicatrización. Mi única esperanza es que el tejido nuevo comience a formarse para que los medicos puedan colocar una matriz dérmica y, posteriormente, realizar un injerto de piel. Si la herida no logra granular, tristemente, la única opción que quedaría sería la amputación total del pie izquierdo.

La recuperación ha sido extremadamente lenta, en gran parte debido a mi diabetes. Sigo recibiendo tratamiento bastante doloroso desde casa, y la situación está lejos de resolverse.

Por qué necesito tu ayuda

Las cuentas médicas por los tres meses de hospitalización, cirugías, medicamentos y cuidados se dispararon rápidamente —muy por encima de lo que mi familia y yo podíamos imaginar o asumir.

Al día de hoy no sé cuánto más demorará en sanar esta herida—o si llegará a sanar. La posibilidad de perder elpie sigue siendo una realidad dolorosa y muy presente.

Estimo que mi necesidad económica total asciende a S/.200,000 (alrededor de USD $56,000) para poder cubrir:

• La deuda pendiente con la clínica

• Los gastos financiados con tarjeta de crédito

• La atención continua y futura (curaciones a domicilio, posibles injertos, terapias)

My name is Liliana Gallegos. I’m a psychologist, 61 years old, and I live in Lima, Peru. I’m currently going through one of the most difficult times of my life—physically, emotionally, and financially. What began as a treatable condition in my foot has evolved into a painful and traumatic process that now threatens the complete loss of my left foot.

In February 2025, I underwent surgery to remove a Morton’s neuroma.

It’s important to mention that I am diabetic, and I was told that proper precautions would be taken. At first, everything seemed to be going well. But shortly after the stitches were removed, the wound reopened and became infected. On March 13, I visited my doctor at SANNA Clinic in San Borja, Lima. Despite clear signs of early infection, he only prescribed oral antibiotics and sent me home. The pain became unbearable, and within a couple of days, my fourth toe began turning black.

In the weeks that followed, I had to undergo emergency surgery and be hospitalized. Ultimately, two toes had to be amputated.

During the nearly three months I spent in the hospital, I went through:

• 21 surgeries (including amputations and multiple surgical wound cleanings)

• Several rounds of spinal and general anesthesia

• Use of a VAC device to control infection and stimulate tissue growth

• Countless hours of physical pain and emotional trauma

I now have a large open wound on the top of my foot. The wound still hasn’t closed and has no skin to allow healing. My only hope is that new tissue begins to form so doctors can place a dermal matrix and later a skin graft. If the wound doesn’t granulate, sadly, the only option left will be a full amputation of my left foot.

Recovery has been extremely slow, largely due to my diabetes. I continue to receive painful treatment at home, and the situation is far from resolved.

Why I Need Your Help

The medical bills for three months of hospitalization, surgeries, medications, and care rapidly escalated far beyond what my family and I ever imagined or could afford. As of today, I don’t know how long this wound will take to heal—or if it ever will. The possibility of losing my foot remains a painful and present reality.

I estimate my total financial need at S/.200,000 (around USD $56,000) to cover:

• The outstanding debt with the clinic

• Credit card expenses used to cover medical costs

• Ongoing and future care (home visits, possible skin grafts, therapy)
