Today, I find myself asking for help with a heavy heart.

My name is Carmen Teresa Benavides Pérez. I am a mother of 8 children, and my family is currently going through one of the most difficult moments of our lives.

My husband, Jorge Socorro Cuenca Hurtado, has been detained by ICE for several weeks. On April 23rd, he attended his court hearing, but his case was postponed until June because we did not have an attorney to represent him. While this new date gives us hope, it also leaves us facing a heartbreaking reality: we do not have the financial resources to hire an immigration lawyer who can properly defend his case.

In the meantime, I am alone caring for our children. We are currently living in a motel thanks to the kindness and support of a foundation that has helped us during this incredibly difficult time. We do not have a stable home or nearby family support.

Our situation is even more painful because one of our daughters, only 4 years old, is in the terminal stage of her illness and is currently receiving palliative and hospice care in the motel. She needs her father. Her brothers and sisters also need their dad during this time of fear, uncertainty, and emotional pain.

As a mother, I am doing everything I can to keep my family together and stay strong for my children, but I cannot do this alone anymore.

Today, we humbly ask for your help to raise funds for an immigration attorney who can give my husband a fair opportunity to return home to his family.

Hoy me veo en la necesidad de pedir ayuda con el corazón en la mano.

Mi nombre es Carmen Teresa Benavides Pérez. Soy mamá de 8 niños y actualmente estoy atravesando uno de los momentos más difíciles de nuestra vida familiar.

Mi esposo, Jorge Socorro Cuenca Hurtado, se encuentra detenido por ICE desde hace varias semanas. El pasado 23 de abril tuvo su audiencia en corte, pero su caso fue pospuesto hasta junio debido a que no contábamos con un abogado que pudiera representarlo. Esta nueva fecha nos da una esperanza… pero también nos deja frente a una realidad muy dura: no tenemos los recursos para pagar una defensa legal adecuada.

Mientras tanto, me encuentro sola cuidando de nuestros hijos. Actualmente vivimos en un motel gracias al apoyo de una fundación que nos ha tendido la mano en este momento tan difícil. No contamos con un hogar estable ni con apoyo familiar cercano.

Nuestra situación se vuelve aún más dolorosa porque una de nuestras hijas, de apenas 4 años, se encuentra en etapa terminal de su enfermedad y recibe cuidados paliativos y de hospicio en el motel. Ella necesita a su papá. Sus hermanos también necesitan a su padre en medio de tanta angustia e incertidumbre.

Como madre, estoy haciendo todo lo posible por mantenernos unidos y seguir adelante, pero ya no puedo hacerlo sola.

Por eso hoy acudimos a ustedes con humildad y esperanza, pidiendo ayuda para poder contratar un abogado de inmigración que le dé a mi esposo una oportunidad justa de regresar con su familia.

Cualquier aporte, por pequeño que sea, significa muchísimo para nosotros. Y si en este momento no puedes donar, compartir esta campaña también sería una enorme ayuda.
