My grandmother, Alma Luz Ramos, began struggling with severe abdominal pain on December 23, 2020. She was rushed to the ER without a clear idea of what was the issue. After several tests, the doctors concluded that her gallbladder had to be removed in order for the pain to go away. She had already been diagnosed 15 years before as suffering from “porcelain” gallbladder, which made everything more complicated. On December 30, 2020 during the surgery, the doctor realized that her condition was more severe. She had a "gigantic" stage 4 hiatal hernia, the worst stage possible stage it could be. Although the gallbladder surgery was successful the doctor said that another surgery would be necessary within two weeks in order to fix the hernia. On January 6 (1 week after the 1st surgery) she had an emergency surgery as her intestine and stomach became trapped on the hernia, causing unbearable pain. After a long and delicate surgery, complications began to arise. Two days after the surgery her oxygen levels became abnormally low, which led to more tests and the discovery of pneumonia; this got complicated over time and then led to sepsis (blood infection). Since she was in a very delicate situation she was moved to the UCI. Two days later she seemed to recover and was moved back to her bedroom. That same night her oxygen levels decreased again, but now accompanied by tachycardia. She suffered three more such episodes until the doctors were finally able to stabilize her. As of today, her recovery seems to be very slow and there is still a possibility of a fistula (an opening where the hernia was) or an external wound infection.
If it were indeed a fistula, the worst case scenario, our grandmother may have to undergo more complicated procedures, despite having been sapped of all energy or strength by her ordeal.
With all being said my family is going through a very difficult financial situation. We are asking for your help to keep covering her extensive, and still mounting, medical expenses. I only wish that my grandmother can go back to the strong, loving, and caring woman she has always been. We all need your help to get my grandmother through this crisis.
We ask you to share and pray for my grandmother's recuperation. We thank you all beforehand.
