Hello everyone my name is Mesías Alessandró Cotto. I was born on January 6th via emergency c-section at 34weeks and 6days. On January 7th I was transferred to SSMHealth Cardinal Glennon children’s hospital in the NICU for having under developed lungs and Renal Failure. January 8th I had my first emergency surgery to try to place a dialysis catheter in my chest as well as a chest tube due to having a air sac in my lungs. I was also placed on a oxygen ventilator to help me breathe since my lungs were under developed. Surgery for my dialysis catheter was unsuccessful my veins were to small and they collapsed when trying to place the catheter. On January 9th they placed a foley in to see if some of my urine would produce . The doctors told my parents that my lungs were to weak, my sodium levels were too low and that my potassium was too high, as well as my Creatinine levels which all have to do with my Renal failure. The doctors on January 10th told my parents I only had 48hrs to live and to spend as much time with me. On January 11th they continued to tell my parents that I was dying. I wasn’t putting out any urine my potassium was so high that my heart could stop, plus I was getting more swollen. Without getting a catheter in my veins and start dialysis I was basically on life support.
They had advised my parents to hold me as much as possible, take me my first and potentially last bath they offered to take professional photos of me with my parents, i got baptized, and they took a recording of my heart for my parents. They were preparing my parents for my passing. My parents didn’t give up on me they didn’t want to take me off of life support they believe in God and they felt God’s presence and had faith in him and his plan for me.
By January 14 the 48hrs had passed and I was still here. My lungs improved enough, my potassium and sodium levels improved miraculously and they offered my parents a risky operation life or death to place a catheter on my left groin vein and my parents took the chance on this surgery as they were not prepared to let me go. Everything went well but the emergency dialysis that same night didn’t work. By January 15 I went into surgery again for the second time to place a PD catheter in my stomach so they can do dialysis but it would need to heal for 10-14 days. A week goes by and my levels are stable enough i could heal. Then unfortunately I got an infection that I had blisters all over my body and they would burst and my skin started to peel off completely and I was in the worst pain you could ever imagine. Then again everything started to go down hill my levels were unstable, I’m not receiving the best nutrition due to my renal failure and having too much fluid in my body plus my skin infection made everything worst.
Today marks 1 month I’m in this world and I know God has a purpose for me. I’m a fighter and I’ve restored many people’s faith during this short time including my parents, my family, the doctors and nurses caring for me. I have a long road ahead before I’m able to go home and receive a kidney transplant.
I would love the support to cover my Medical Costs and help my parents during this long road ahead to recovery. Any support would help as well as prayers during this journey. God Bless!!
