On November 7th my parents went to WakeMed because my mom had not been able to eat for a week and she felt a discomfort in her abdomen. After almost a week there, they took a biopsy of the football-sized mass in her abdomen and then sent her home with only pain medication, while my family was waiting to receive a diagnosis. After a while of waiting, we did not receive conclusive results, which is when on November 20th, my parents went to UNC Rex, where we were told that she had liposarcoma, a rare type of cancer that comes from the fat cells. We were originally told that she would be sent from UNC Rex to either Chapel Hill or Duke so that a team of specialists could perform a treatment plan including radiation, chemo, and surgery. We were stuck waiting for a bed to free up in either hospital for her to be transferred over. However, in the two weeks following the original scan of the tumor, it had grown 20%. We were then told that there was nothing more that medicine could do to help her; neither hospital we were told we would be transferred to wanted to risk getting involved in such a risky case. On December 8th, she was sent home with hospice care. During these weeks, my dad and I have been dedicating ourselves to take care of my mom, along with my two younger sisters. This GoFundMe is to help cover expenses.
