Queridos amigos, hoy quiero compartir una historia que necesita de nuestra compasión, solidaridad y acción. Laura Velasteguí es una joven hermosa por dentro y por fuera. Tiene un corazón bondadoso, siempre dispuesta a ayudar a quien lo necesite, y a pesar de llevar muy poco tiempo en Estados Unidos, ya ha dejado huella en la vida de quienes la rodean. Hoy, Laura enfrenta la batalla más difícil de su vida: ha sido diagnosticada con insuficiencia renal crónica en etapa 5, la más avanzada. Sus riñones han dejado de funcionar, y aunque ha estado recibiendo diálisis, estos tratamientos han comenzado a hacerle más daño que bien. Como consecuencia, ahora también sufre de neuropatía urémica, una condición dolorosa y debilitante causada por la acumulación de toxinas que su cuerpo ya no puede eliminar. Su única esperanza es un trasplante de riñón, pero hay un gran obstáculo: Laura no tiene documentos migratorios ni seguro médico, lo que limita gravemente sus opciones para recibir el tratamiento que necesita urgentemente. Always willing to help others, she has made a difference in the lives of many — even though she has only been in the U.S. for a short time. Now Laura is facing the toughest battle of her life. She has been diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease (stage 5). Her kidneys no longer function, and although she has been undergoing dialysis, the treatment is now doing more harm than good. As a result, she is also suffering from uremic neuropathy, a painful and debilitating condition caused by the buildup of toxins her body can no longer eliminate. Her only hope is a kidney transplant.
