Hace un [1] año, comencé a sentir un dolor intenso e insoportable en las vértebras cervicales y la cabeza, que fue empeorando gradualmente hasta el punto en que los medicamentos de venta libre ya no eran suficientes para aliviar el dolor. Durante una cita médica con un neurocirujano, me ordenaron una resonancia magnética, que reveló dos hernias discales cervicales entre las vértebras [C5 y C6] y entre las vértebras [C6 y C7]. Estas hernias presionan mi médula espinal. Si la compresión continúa, el daño podría empeorar y destruirla permanentemente. El neurocirujano sugirió una cirugía urgente para evitar la destrucción de las vías nerviosas y la lesión medular permanente. Esta cirugía implica la colocación de dos prótesis cervicales para prevenir una futura parálisis.

Este proceso también requiere un broncoscopio, así como la intubación de un cirujano torácico debido al estrechamiento de mi cuello causado por esta afección. Todos estos procedimientos, así como los materiales [prótesis] [broncoscopio], son extremadamente costosos para alguien en mi situación, ya que no tengo los recursos económicos para pagarlos. A estos costos se suman los suministros adicionales y otros gastos pre y postoperatorios. Dada la crisis del sistema de salud pública del país, me resulta imposible cubrir todos estos gastos, habiendo agotado ya, todos los recursos disponibles para realizar pruebas y exámenes para llegar al diagnóstico final.

My name is Zulay Romero. I am 67 years old, and I have been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for many years, a condition with which I have faced multiple challenges. I have a prosthesis in my left knee and hip, which allowed me to walk for short periods or with the support of a cane. Over time, I have had to use a wheelchair to move around and perform my daily activities. One year ago, I began to experience intense, unbearable pain in my cervical vertebrae and head, which gradually worsened to the point where over-the-counter medications were no longer enough to relieve the pain. During a medical appointment with a neurosurgeon, I was ordered to have an MRI, which revealed two cervical disc hernias between the [C5 and C6] vertebrae and between the [C6 and C7] vertebrae. These hernias are pressing on my spinal cord. If the compression continues, the damage could worsen and permanently destroy it. The neurosurgeon suggested urgent surgery to prevent the nerve pathways from being destroyed and causing permanent spinal cord injury. This surgery involves placing [two] cervical prostheses to prevent future paralysis.

This process also requires a bronchoscope, as well as a thoracic surgeon to perform intubation due to the narrowing of my neck caused by this condition. All of these procedures, as well as the materials [prostheses] [bronchoscope], are extremely expensive for someone in my situation, as I do not have the financial means to pay for them. On top of these costs, there are additional supplies and other pre- and post-operative expenses. Given the crisis in the country’s public health system, it is impossible for me to cover all these expenses, having already exhausted all the resources I had for tests and exams to reach the final diagnosis.
