Gracias a todos por leer. Luis necesita de tu ayuda para anotar los puntos más importantes de su vida y ganarle al cáncer.
Luis Armando Hurtado siempre ha tenido magia. Desde que era muy joven ya se perfilaba como un niño espléndido, inclinado hacia sus pasiones siendo la mayor el baloncesto. Esto, atípico, al ser de un país donde el básquetbol no es el deporte más popular, y oriundo de Mérida, una tierra en donde curiosamente la pasión deportiva gravita hacia otro deporte con balón: el fútbol.
Hablo de “magia”, porque en este deporte que tanto ama desde que lo empezó a practicar, el juego le venía muy fácil. Natural. Lucía aventajado, talentoso, y así quemó etapas y destacaba a nivel regional, luego a nivel nacional, y después a nivel internacional ya representando a Venezuela en categorías menores a la corta edad de 14 años.
Su sueño es llegar a la NBA. Para ello, él sabía, tendría que ir a donde juegan los mejores: Estados Unidos. Como familia, nos aferramos al corazón y cuando le llegó la oportunidad de recibir una beca para irse a estudiar, y jugar basketball en Norteamérica, lo dejamos ir. Así de decidido y maduro se mostraba. A su llegada, esa misma determinación empezó a dar frutos. Ya hablaban entrenadores, y scouts de “aquel espigado chico de Venezuela, con magia en las manos” que hacía mejor a sus compañeros con sus asistencias, y cestas decisivas.
Conductor de equipo, base armador, el director de orquesta de 1.98 centímetros de estatura destacaba en Georgia, y luego en Florida durante estos años de high school. Universidades se fijaban en él y le ofrecían beca completa para continuar sus estudios, con tal que jugara para alguno de esos programas universitarios. Como padres, a tantos kilómetros de distancia y sin poder verlo, también soñábamos junto a él. Esa meta se hizo realidad y fue reclutado por la universidad de Alabama-Birmingham, donde hoy en día, lleva la distinción de ser el único venezolano en la maxima división colegial de los Estados Unidos. El 38º venezolano en jugar la División 1, siguiendo los pasos de otros soñadores como Carl Herrera, Yvan Olivares, Gabriel Estaba, Diego Guevara, Héctor Romero, Greivis Vásquez, David Cubillán, Gregory Echenique o Michael Carrera, entre otros que han dejado nuestra bandera en alto. Cuando se habla de relevo y de jóvenes talentos emergentes en la selección de Venezuela, Luis Hurtado es de los primeros nombres en lista.
... Durante su temporada debut en el baloncesto universitario, aquel dolor que le empezó a aquejar de repente, se hizo más y más constante. A ratos, insoportable. La debilidad le invadía , y el dolor no se detenía. En el hospital, ese dolor fue diagnosticado como Cáncer de testículo. Lejos de derrumbarse, ese niño que llenó mi corazón desde pequeñito rebotando ese balón naranja por la casa, y con la misma determinación de siempre, decidió seguir adelante. Y con voluntad inquebrantable y una sonrisa, me ha enseñado lecciones de valentía y humildad. Este es mi verdadero “NBA”.
La universidad de UAB ha sido un gran apoyo en nuestros esfuerzos y con esta petición. Han cubierto todos los gastos médicos, y nos han dicho que no nos preocupáramos por los costos de quimios y medicamentos. Pero, lamentablemente, no es lo único que Luis necesita ya que solo no puede estar. A duras penas pude viajar y así acompañarlo durante estos meses de tratamiento, y que tuviese ese calorcito y cariño en los momentos más duros. Alquilamos un pequeño apartamento a donde nos mudamos, y al no poder trabajar en este país y estar con los gastos del día a día para él y para mi hasta finales del verano, cuando culmina sus sesiones de quimioterapia, me he visto en la necesidad de buscar ayuda. Todas las donaciones serán provistas para complementar a los gastos médicos básicos de Luis, el alquiler mensual de vivienda, comidas, transporte en taxi desde/hasta el hospital,

Luis Armando Hurtado always had magic. Since he was very young you could tell he’ll be a splendid child, inclined towards his passions, being the biggest basketball. This was atypical, him being from a country where basketball is not the most popular sport, and a native of Merida, a region of Venezuela where, curiously, the passion for sports gravitates towards another sport played with a ball: soccer.
I speak of "magic", because since he started practicing the sport that he loves so much, the game came very easy for him. He was a natural. He excelled, oozed with talent and thus burned development stages and stood out at the regional level first, then at the national level, and later at the international FIBA level already representing Venezuela in youth categories at the young age of 14 years.
His dream is to reach the NBA. For that, he knew he would have to go where the best ones play: the United States. As a family, we clung to our hearts and when he got the opportunity to receive a scholarship to go to school and play basketball in North America, we let him go. He was so determined and mature. Upon his arrival, that same determination began to get recognition. Coaches and scouts were creating buzz of "that tall, lanky kid from Venezuela, with magic in his hands" that made his teammates better with their assists, and decisive baskets.
Team leader, point guard, the 6’6 orchestra conductor stood out in Georgia, and then in Florida during his high school years. Universities paid attention to him and offered him full scholarships to continue his studies, and having Luis play for one of those basketball programs. As parents, so many kilometers away and without being able to see it, we also dreamed together with him. That goal became reality and he was recruited by the University of Alabama-Birmingham, where today, Luis carries the distinction of being the only Venezuelan in the maximum collegiate division of the United States. The 38th Venezuelan to play Division 1, following in the footsteps of other dreamers like Carl Herrera, Yvan Olivares, Gabriel Estaba, Diego Guevara, Hector Romero, Greivis Vásquez, David Cubillán, Gregory Echenique or Michael Carrera, among others who have put our waving flag up top. When talking about the new generation of emerging young talents in the Venezuelan national team, Luis Hurtado is one of the first names on the list.
... During his debut season in the college basketball ranks, the pain that suddenly began to ache, became more and more constant. At times, unbearable. Weakness invaded him, and the pain did not stop. In the hospital, that pain was diagnosed as testicular cancer. Far from collapsing, that child who filled my heart since he was little, bouncing that orange ball around the house, and with the same determination as always, decided to keep going. And with an unwavering will and a smile, he has taught me lessons in courage and humility. This is my true "NBA".
UAB has been very supportive of our efforts and this page. They have covered medical expenses, and they have told us not to worry about the costs of chemo and drugs. But, unfortunately, it's not the only aid Luis needs since he just can not be alone. I’ve barely made the trip given our humble background and accompany him during these months of treatment, and that he had that warmth and mother affection in the hardest moments. We rented a small apartment where we moved, and being unable to work in this country and cover the daily expenses for us until the end of summer, when his chemotherapy sessions would be over, I had the need to to look for help. All donations will be provided to supplement the basic medical expenses, monthly housing rent, meals and groceries, taxi transportation to / from the hospital of Luis.
