My name is Ayanna Wright and I am a senior Marketing and Honors English double major at the University of Maryland, College Park. In January of 2020 I will be traveling to Cape Town, South Africa to study abroad for two weeks. While there, I will be studying Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Contemporary South African Context.
I believe that is important to make the most out of everything and studying abroad will allow me to make the most out of my college experience.
Purpose driven marketing is something that I believe should be incorporated into business wherever possible. To successfully create change it is important to interact with the communities one wishes to help one on one. I can think of no better place full of history and cultural richness to study social entrepreneurship and innovation and how it can tie into purpose driven marketing than South Africa.
When I graduate in May 2020 I plan to pursue advertising. Long-term I would like to create advertising campaigns that represent typically underrepresented communities. Representation is something that is very important in media.
While I have had some advertising experience, I have had no exposure to interacting with people in a global business context. Studying abroad will help me understand larger demographics and create advertising campaigns that will appeal to diverse demographics and more people than just those in North America.
The total cost of the trip is $3,040 not including airfare which ranges from $1,200 to $1,800 and other expenses for a total amount of $5,235.
As an out of state college student with a younger sister who also attends an out of state university family funds are low.
Studying abroad will help me build my global mindset and expand my horizons since I have never been to a continent outside of North America. Any amount to help me go abroad and take advantage of this once in a life time opportunity is appreciated. I will be sure to post updates from my trip once I return! Thank you so much!
