Bring ventilator support to hospitals everywhere

Help us to insure that hospitals have the tools necessary to support a COVID-19 outbreak. As this pandemic progresses, the one thing that experts agree on is that it is difficult to predict what will come next. Testing has been inaccurate, patterns difficult to predict, immunity unproven, and viral mutation rate high. Initial research found 160+ strains of the COVID-19 genome with three significantly different types; as of May, scientists have identified and are tracking  14+ strains different enough to have varying outcomes and rates of infectiousness and unique responses to treatment. As travel resumes, it is critical that we prepare for the worst while hoping for the best.

My best friend and I were in the early planning phase for a think tank/consulting business when this pandemic started. There was suddenly this huge, global problem, and it was impossible to continue on the same course.

In February, I began reading everything I could find on COVID-19. I remember crying while reading a story about an elderly woman in Belgian who died after refusing a ventilator, telling doctors to save it for younger patients. We needed an easy, fast, and scalable solution to the ventilator shortage.

In April, I watched a YouTube video of the doctor demonstrating how one could split ventilators, and I looked at that and was inspired to create a solution. We could make that process easier. Though ventilator tubing can be split with existing supplies, supplies of everything run short in a crisis, and having something that is clearly designed for and labeled as a solution to a problem is valuable in times of mental/emotional exhaustion. I reached out to a relative in the injection molding industry and filed the company paperwork the next day.

This isn’t theoretical; this technology is doubling the capacity of existing ventilators TODAY. We're grateful for the team that has assembled around this idea, collaborating day and night to build this initiative, to ensure that hospitals can prepare for a possible but impossible to predict influx of COVID-19 patients without spending an exorbitant amount of money. There is still a critical shortage of ventilators globally, and one ventilator costs between $25,000-$50,000.

It is our mission to provide a simple solution to ventilator shortages, allowing doctors to focus on what matters: the patient. Your donation toward our goal will allow us to order 20,000 splitters, deliver them to hospitals, and order the second round needed to keep up with demand.

Business Model:  100% of money received through this GoFundMe will go toward manufacturing and donating ventilator splitters to hospitals in need. As we grow, we will continue to donate some to hospitals in need here in the United States and internationally and to sell some on a sliding scale to cover costs.

Ayama ventilator splitters are made in the USA. They are made of FDA-approved material at a factory that is certified to make medical devices. We have filed our Emergency Use Authorization with the FDA and are prepped to scale.

We are currently focused on the needs here in the USA, but we are tracking global data and, as we scale, look forward to being part of the global solution.

History: The original paper documenting this type of modification of a ventilator was published in 2006. Since then, the only known use has been after the Las Vegas massacre in 2017, and now in Italy and New York in 2020. New York began splitting ventilators between patients before the FDA approved it, using this device.

Incentive: If you are interested in donating Ayama ventilator splitters directly to your local hospital, we are offering incentives at the following levels:

$200 = 20 units
$500 = 50
$1000 = 100
$5000 = 500

To redeem, simply donate at the appropriate level and email us at sales@verdant-city.com to arrange delivery.
