School Supplies for Honduras

Donation protected
"Through ignorance, one descends to servitude; through education, one ascends to freedom." ~Diego Luis Córdoba

So many rural village schools in Honduras don't have even the most basic school supplies, like pencils, erasers, notebooks, or crayons; and many rural teachers receive no support from the government to buy materials for their classroom, requiring them to buy supplies from their own personal finances (when many teachers earn barely enough to subsist themselves).

I have created "Project Ascend, Central America" to help address those needs, and I need your help. Students are required to come to school with a notebook and pencil, which costs the equivalent of about $1 USD. And yet many families cannot afford even this, and therefore are unable to send their children to school. Just $1.00 worth of materials every couple months can keep a child in school, thereby improving not only the future of the child, but of the community in which the child will eventually become an adult member.

There are many passionate, dedicated teachers who work in these villages despite overwhelming obstacles and odds, and are determined to improve the lives of children in extreme poverty. Can you help? A simple donation of $10 could provide notebooks for 20 kids, or pencils for 200. A $5 play toolkit can provide a valuable learning experience for kindergarten students, or a $3 stuffed animal can provide comfort for students coming to school from abysmal homes. We also help teachers with the tools they need to do their jobs, such as dictionaries, books, dry erase markers, and other resources; as well as providing basic first aid supplies (bandaids, neosporin, anti-diarrheal medication) so that when children come to school with ailments it can be addressed before becoming a medical emergency.

While we are glad to accept donated items (contact me for more information about this), buying materials here in Honduras is not only cheaper and faster than shipping, but has the added benefit of providing work for locals and contributing to the local economy, currently suffering greatly due to many factors.

A donation in any amount would be so greatly appreciated. For more information, check out my blog at www.projectascend.org or find me on facebook at www.facebook.com/projectascendca, and please share with anyone you think might be interested in helping!
