Help us support artists – invitation to donate to our Hardship Fund

At Axisweb, we are our community. Especially in these difficult times, we know that our most important strength is you, our members.

On 20 March we launched our Hardship Fund  in response to the global health crisis and its unprecedented ramifications for artists. The Hardship Fund represents an initial commitment of £5,000, distributed in 50 x £100 awards over a period of 5 weeks. The Fund is open to any Axisweb member experiencing financial difficulty and applicants do not need to explain why they need the money.

In the last few weeks we have received more than 700+ applications for support. This overwhelming response—representing over £70,000 that we could have given away—demonstrates the scale of need within our community. However, as a small charity, not in receipt of any public funding, we are sadly unable to help everyone, much as we would like to.

Several members have been in touch to ask whether it’s possible to donate to the Hardship Fund to help us support more members of our artistic community. We are so touched by this generosity and wanted to create a GoFundme page to help facilitate this and to match the £5,000 we've already committed. All  donations will be added to our Hardship Fund, with every penny going to artists in need.

This unprecedented public health situation has huge impacts on the arts sector, with members reporting cancellation of projects, loss of income and increased care responsibilities. Here's what some of our recent recipients have said the Hardship Fund has meant to them:

"My work has stopped since public spaces were locked down. In the middle of panic and anxiety, this Axisweb Hardship Fund Award gives me hope. Thank you for showing me a light at the end of the dark tunnel."

"With all the Spring/Summer exhibitions postponed or cancelled comes the worries of how to survive. We are all living in worrying times and being creative is a struggle just now, so to get an email containing such a kind gesture is truly humbling and hugely appreciated."

"Knowing that we have the support and expertise of Axisweb to help us ride this wave is a real comfort."

If you are able to donate and support others in our artistic community please do so on this page. We'd also be hugely grateful if you could share this page with your own networks to help spread the word.

Here's what one our the generous benefactors has to say about the value of the Fund at this time:

"Artists are deeply affected by the current crisis, as freelancers, mainly on low incomes, and with the visual arts infrastructure closed or limited by lockdown. I donated because my career has been in the visual arts, in different roles. I am an artist and I see artists as my community."

From the Axisweb Team and Axisweb Members, we thank you for your donation.
