George, my dad, "celebrated" his 90th birthday in a skilled nursing facility. His saga started at the end of March, 2020 when he developed a bladder infection that went to the only kidney he has, and then into his spine within one week. He had such debilitating pain that he could not turn in bed, let alone get up and walk without assistance. Over the next 16 weeks he was in and out of hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and rehab centers. His pain increased and made it impossible for him to turn by himself. Also, because of his spine infection, he suffered neurologic loss that left him incontinent. This necessitated total care in turning him every 2 hours and cleaning him if he went to the bathroom. He developed a large and serious pressure wound just above his tailbone 5 weeks into his "care". The wound got so large that he had to have a surgical debridement where they removed dead tissue. After spending 25 more days at a post-surgical wound center, he was given the choice to go home or back to a nursing facility. He chose to go home and vowed never to go back to a facility again. His wound is large and open, having to have dressing changes every 1-2 days.
Dad and Mom, Agnes, want to stay home with Hospice. However, Dad also needs 24/7 private-duty care. This is very expensive and the family is in need of financial assistance. The skilled nurses that visit my dad at home all comment on the care he is getting at home is far better than what he would receive at a nursing facility. They also said that he would not survive long in another facility. With your support, we can insure that my parents' needs and wishes are met, and Dad will be able to live at home.
