Save Princess Leia

Hi! My name is Ricardo Quezada. I am a high school history teacher and my daughter, Leia, needs your help. Princess Leia is a 5 year old German Shepherd. I have raised Leia on my own since she was 6 weeks old. She is a friendly, energetic, loving, and caring dog. She loves going on bike rides, hiking trips, and especially loves everything about the beach.

Recently, while we were on a hike, I noticed that Leia was limping on her right leg. After examinations by her vet and an orthopedic specialist, we discovered that she tore her right cranial cruciate ligament - the equivalent of a human ACL. My heart dropped when I learned how expensive the procedure is; it pains me even more to see her develop arthritis in her knee, unable to do the things she loves like hiking, running, and playing fetch without experiencing pain.

Due to her torn ligament, my best friend, Leia, will need essential surgery so that she can lead a happy and healthy life.

The total cost of surgery ranges from $8,878 to $12,561. The procedure is called a TPLO - a surgery that will change the geometry of the knee so she can function without the ligament. This cost will cover radiographs, implant plate, operating room time, anesthesia, and overnight stay. Thankfully, this procedure has a 90-95% success rate. If all goes well, Leia will be 80% healed in 8 weeks and fully healed in 4-6 months.

Although I have enough saved for the initial pre-op, the actual surgery and a genetic eye condition that Leia has to live with for the rest of her life has become too much financially for me. Subbing during my only break throughout the day has not been enough.

Leia is the apple of my eye. She means the world to me. She’s been with me through all of my ups and downs, including supporting me emotionally during my own ACL tear. Leia has been so important for my mental health during the pandemic.
