Help AWLAHURIO Expand Access to Justice for Women and Children in Tanzania:

Every year, hundreds of women and children in the Arusha region of Tanzania are denied access to justice simply because they cannot afford legal representation. At AWLAHURIO, we work to change that.

Arusha Women Legal Aid and Human Rights Organization (AWLAHURIO) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1998. We provide free legal aid, human rights education, community outreach, workshops, and mediation services throughout the Arusha region. Our team is made up entirely of interns and volunteers, meaning every donation goes directly towards helping the people we serve.

Why We Need Your Help:

Our biggest obstacle is our lack of space.

Our current office is just 11.2 m² and is located on the fourth floor of a building with no lift. Despite having a dedicated network of volunteers capable of assisting many more people, our office severely limits the number of clients we can receive.

This creates three major challenges:

Lack of privacy: Many of our clients are survivors of domestic violence, property disputes, or other sensitive human rights violations. In our small office, confidential conversations often take place in the presence of several volunteers, making it difficult for clients to feel safe sharing their experiences.

Limited capacity: The office is too small to accommodate multiple clients or mediation sessions, forcing us to turn people away or delay assistance.

Poor accessibility: Elderly clients and people with disabilities often cannot reach our fourth-floor office, leaving some of the most vulnerable members of our community without access to legal support.

Our Goal:

With a larger, accessible office, we can increase the number of people receiving legal aid from around 500 each year to as many as 2,000.

Our first step is purchasing a plot of land in a safe, accessible area on the outskirts of Arusha where we can establish a permanent legal aid centre designed to meet the needs of our community.

The funds raised will also help us cover essential operational costs, including travel to courts and rural communities. Too often, we are forced to decline cases or limit our outreach because of financial constraints. Additional funding will allow us to represent more clients, travel further, and educate more communities about their legal rights.
