My short film Awkward is about the quiet courage it takes to walk into a room before you believe you belong there. The story follows Blue, a student on her first day trying to push herself to join Film Club after backing out the year before. Throughout the day she keeps stumbling—literally and emotionally—but with the help of two classmates who notice her and support her in different ways, she finally takes the step she’s been afraid to take.
This project is inspired by real first-day experiences many students have, especially in creative environments where it can feel intimidating to put yourself out there. I wanted to capture those small moments that feel huge when you’re living them—the hesitation before opening a door, the embarrassment of a mistake, and the relief of realizing someone is quietly rooting for you. As film students, my producer and I connected to this story because we’ve both experienced what it’s like to enter new creative spaces unsure if we belonged yet. We wanted to make a short film that reflects that feeling honestly and reminds people that sometimes confidence starts with just showing up.
Our goal with Awkward is to create something simple, relatable, and human that audiences recognize themselves in. We would be so grateful for your support in helping us make Awkward a reality. Every contribution brings us closer to sharing this story with others who might need a little encouragement to take their own first step.
