Raising Awareness for Brain Tumours

Donation protected
I will be fundraising and raising awareness for The Brain Tumour Charity, I will be using some of the funds I raise, to give a treat to my parents as they both deserve it, with the pandemic and my dads health, they have literally been confined to the house with my mum has been doing literally everything herself, she is amazing as they both are. Funds will be split between The Brain Tumour Charity and my parents, the split will be dependant on the amount of money raised. Shockingly, brain tumour research is massively underfunded with only 1% of Cancer Research allocated to this devastating and heart-breaking disease. I have my own personal story which I will be sharing however I would like to let you know briefly why I am doing this.

On 03.06.19 my dad was diagnosed with a ‘benign’ brain tumour. My dad is 53 years old and been fit and healthy all his life, no health issues whatsoever. On my wedding day, 18.05.19, my dad began experiencing symptoms, his legs felt heavy and a few days later, he had a seizure in his left leg, he was sent for a CT scan, the results came back, my dad had a mass on his brain, a 3cm meningioma which was on one of the main veins in the brain. Dad began to lose his mobility, his legs became weak, leaving him in a wheel chair. My dad underwent brain surgery at the end of May, they were able to remove the majority or the tumour however, the location of the tumour made it difficult for the surgeon to remove 100% of the tumour. Dad had radiotherapy to treat the remainder as the tumour came back as atypical which meant there was a chance this could return. Dad was beginning to get back to normal, dad returned to work and could walk again. With the 12-month scan approaching, dad had a seizure again in his left leg, dad went to A and E and he had a CT scan on his brain, the scan showed ‘recurrence’ in the tumour, dad was told that although they could operate again and remove the remainder, the operation could kill him due to the dangerous location of the tumour. Dad then began experiencing back pain, he couldn’t walk without being in excruciating pain, he was sent for a scan, the scan showed a mass, on dad’s T11 on his spine. Dad had a biopsy and cement was injected into his back; dad was then sent to Salford Royal for an operation on his spine. Dad’s biopsy came back and after a visit to Christies, we were told the tumour was cancerous, dad needed chemotherapy, this wasn’t effective  Dad’s spinal surgeon advised radiotherapy as dad’s spine on the scans looked strong enough, at this point dad was using a stick to walk. Further scans showed that the radiotherapy had not been effective, and no other treatments are now available for him. We were told that the tumours were not connected as the type of brain tumour dad has isn’t known to spread and is usually ‘benign’, we were told this would be ‘unique, however as time went on, we were told that the brain tumour had led to the spinal tumour and no surgeon in the country can explain why.

I need as much support as possible to raise awareness around this and to change things! My family along with others are going through absolute hell and heartbreak every day and more could be done that isn’t being done! We are an extremely close family, and my dad is the heart and soul,  it is the most terrifying and heart-breaking thing to go through, seeing someone you love, go through so much.
