Still No In-Home Healthcare for this Couple!

Stephon Joines was diagnosed with early-onset dementia in the form of Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia in 2019, less than two years after marrying his beautiful wife, Janeen. While Stephon’s condition has continued to decline, Janeen’s love has risen — and she cares for her husband at home 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Stephon has not been able to take care of his basic needs for over a year now. His worsening mental state is accompanied by increasing hallucinations, prolonged periods of sleeplessness, periodic episodes of paranoia, and extreme anxiety.

These symptoms will deteriorate; the normal course for those suffering from forms of dementia like Alzheimer’s is institutionalization. The Alzheimer’s Society says, "Being in an unfamiliar environment and the added stress caused by medical treatment may lead to increased confusion or disorientation." Sadly, this has been true with Stephon. This often progresses the illness more rapidly than being home and in their familiar environment. You can only imagine how terrifying it is for loved ones in such a vulnerable position.

Casting her family’s burdens upon the Lord, Janeen has dedicated herself to loving her husband through this very trying time at considerable financial cost, her career, and health.

Will you please help us keep Stephon at home with his wife?

There are local, supportive friends of the Joines in Maryland who are relaunching the very instrumental campaign that began last September by their dear friends in Texas, Michelle and Ned Brekelbaum. Their loving efforts helped to cover many medical and living expenses that continue to pile up. Now, our goal is to raise $50,000 to meet their increasing medical needs and household expenses.

What has happened since last year’s GoFundMe?

  • Janeen has been struggling greatly with the healthcare system to get Stephon qualified for at-home healthcare – for which he is eligible. They have been on a waiting list for over a year!

  • Janeen is working on her third application for Medicaid. Our prayer is that it will finally be approved once processed.

  • Stephon has been in the hospital four times and in skilled nursing facilities three times for several physical and mental health-related problems; each occurrence has caused suffering and difficult setbacks for Stephon and Janeen.

It is possible that Stephon may need to be temporarily placed in a healthcare facility to expedite the medical assistance process, but the goal is to return home with essential in-home care services.

Please consider supporting this dear family in any way you can. Your prayers are especially needed. Our goal is to raise enough funds to allow the Joines to stay together in their home and not let this disease separate this couple from one another.

Thank you in advance!
