Avry's Top Surgery Fundraiser

Avry is a financially independent hair stylist working through an apprenticeship in New York following school to provide gender-affirming services with a focus on hair restoration, extensions, color, cuts and more. They want to honor the spectrum in which people like to express themselves and how they feel on the inside. Whether it's beautiful, funky, glamourous, or even scary Avry strives to honor the person who is in their chair and bring to life their client's vision without the tired gender stereotypes attached that the beauty industry is so stuck in.

Being both Non-Binary and Transgender in the beauty industry has proven to be one of the most challenging aspects of navigating this new career path. This industry has relied heavily on outdated binary gender cues to shape one's experience from beginning to end in the services we offer and how a stylist is received by a stranger. Working in a front-facing service industry in a body perceived "female" leads to constant misgendering. There is no right or wrong way a body needs to be presented for the person occupying it to be honored and gendered correctly. But for Avry, navigating and dismantling these old ways of thinking while also actively working within this industry has led to daily bouts of dysphoria and dissociation. These symptoms of dysphoria have led to major depression and setbacks in reaching their goals of becoming a gender-affirming full-fled stylist. Life in a constant state of dissociation and dysphoria is life in a state of survival. One cannot thrive in survival mode. That is why Top Surgery is considered a medical necessity and a life-saving procedure for Avry.

Because of the short notice of surgery dates as well as the cost of living in NYC every contribution is deeply appreciated by Avry. This level of collective care in ensuring Avry's survival means the world to them. Fortunately surgeries are covered by Medicaid through AmidaCare. The fundraiser amount is to cover 6 weeks of recovery.
